Ascot stages a strong ten-race program for Northerly Stakes Day, highlighted by the Group 1 feature and supported by competitive fields across the card.

Punters get a mix of emerging talent and established performers, with several key formlines converging and enough depth across the undercard to create genuine value opportunities.

Ascot Tips December 6

Race 1 - 11:59AM Swan Draught Handicap Tips (1600m)

3. Trio is leading hope in a competitive opener for Northerly Stakes Day, having improved with each run this time in and now getting back to a mile third-up, which suits given he has won two of three over the Ascot 1600m.

He stuck on well for third here on November 22 and Nash Rawiller should have options from barrier three in a small field, making this look a suitable assignment.

5. Correct Choice also comes through that November 22 race and the extra furlong fourth-up is a positive for the gelding at this stage of his preparation.

He may have to loop the field, which is the query, although he was a fourth-up Ascot winner last campaign and he was doing his best work late a fortnight ago.

4. Royal Toronado appeared to have his chance last Saturday but it was another honest performance, and he has form on the seven-day turnaround which includes saluting on the backup just over 12 months ago here, while 7. Our Rocky Bay has been backed at his last three starts and is an on-speed influence.

Selections: 3, 5, 4, 7.

Race 2 - 12:34PM Magic Millions Plate Tips (1000m)

Late betting will be your best guide with these youngsters, with all but one of the single-figure chances being first starters including 9. Ace Queen Suited, who heads early markets and produced the most eye-catching trial when closing late to win a Belmont 1000m heat on November 24.

She has held her spot in early action, while 10. Call To Order was very sharp in a 400m Belmont dash on November 24 where the youngster showed natural speed to lead throughout by four lengths, and she hails from the same family as four-time Group 1 winner Mannerism.

11. Parmalee is another trial winner who held on to score in her hit-out despite racing a little greenly over the concluding stages.

Barrier one looks a significant positive for this filly, with a rail to follow a big plus for an inexperienced juvenile.

2. Red Lark was the best of the raced brigade after making ground behind a smart Beatty on debut, although he started at huge odds in that appearance.

Selections: 9, 10, 11, 2.

Race 3 - 1:11PM Parliamentarians Cup Tips (2200m)

An each-way price is available fourth-up for 1. Rocking Society, who does need to lift, although aside from a plain second-up effort in the York Cup he is going a little better than the form reads, having opened his campaign with a one-length defeat here over a mile before an even showing stepping to 2100m on Railway Stakes Day.

Blinkers replace the winkers here, while strong senior rider Brad Rawiller takes the reins on the son of Awesome Rock, who was very consistent around this distance range early last season and should be fitter now with three runs completed.

2. Weeraechoux isn’t always the easiest horse to catch, though he was going okay before the third-up shocker, and he made inroads with the second-fastest last 400m and 200m of his latest run despite being well held.

He is a stakes winner at this distance and his record at 2200m is solid, and he is a far more capable galloper than his big price suggests.

3. Fame looked a promising stayer early but never went on with it, and after two Western Australian runs—including being held up at stages last Saturday—he rises in trip and carries three kilos less, while 8. Summer’s Legacy ran the fastest closing sectionals of the same event and may be looking for this further distance now.

Selections: 1, 2, 3, 8.

Race 4 - 1:51PM Quayclean Plate Tips (1000m)

With plenty of speed engaged here, one that may take a sit and chime in late is 3. Rostislav, who was a stylish debut winner over this trip in May before a spell and briefly loomed to win first-up over this track and journey on October 11 before being picked up late by Talkanko and Luana Miss, which is a strong reference for this race.

He was less competitive in his next two starts, though coming back in distance now looks a positive for the gelding and the early market has shown him a measure of respect.

1. Castle Road simply doesn’t run 1200m as his form suggests, although 1000m can be a specialist trip and he is unbeaten from three attempts at the distance including two wins over the Ascot five furlongs.

Some relief comes via the Zephen Johnston-Porter claim which sees him in well enough at the weights for this assignment.

5. Monte Tremezzo could be the forgotten runner after a shocker in her sole winter appearance, and her debut win earlier this year over 6. Storm Away reads well, with blinkers going on the second favourite following a breakthrough victory third-up.

Selections: 3, 1, 5, 6.

Race 5 - 2:28PM MCA Polytrack Handicap Tips (1400m)

After covering ground, fitness gave out with 8. Shmoov Moova first-up in a race won by the unbeaten and impressive Smooth Chino. The son of Territories couldn’t progress last prep, which I suspect was due to wet tracks despite still producing a strong second to Cosmic Crusader on September 13, and he was an Ascot 1400m winner in March.

He had been putting together a good record early in his career, and blinkers go on for the first time along with a sharp 5kg drop in the weight, while he also gains the services of William Pike in what looks a thin race for the grade.

7. Cashel Palace comes through the same race as Smooth Mover, and the mare ran the third-fastest last 200m of that event after settling back from a wide draw following a solid Belmont trial.

She was a Listed winner at this track and trip just over 12 months ago, and the mare has a kinder alley for this second-up attempt.

9. Without Reg is better placed back in grade after being outclassed second-up in the Carbine Club behind Cosmic Crusader, and he has a very good third-up record of two wins and three placings from seven attempts, while 2. River Rubicon has been racing almost exclusively at stakes level over the last few years. The return was okay without threatening and he has a decent second-up record. He could be the blowout.

Selections: 8, 7, 9, 2.

Race 6 - 3:03PM Tabtouch – Westspeed Platinum Series Final Tips (1400m)

Hopefully 9. Auto Cruise can settle closer in this third-up attempt, arriving here off an eye-catching runner-up finish in the November 22 heat when producing the second-fastest last 200m on the Railway Stakes program.

She arrived there from a good first-up second behind Lanfranco, a galloper who had won well the start prior and was fourth at Listed level last Saturday, and Auto Cruise has more upside than many of these more exposed rivals.

She showed promising signs with two winter runs including a well-backed debut victory, and she looks capable of going one better with even luck on Saturday.

8. Hammarmill is building towards a peak run and looks suited rising to 1400m on the quick backup from last Saturday, and that followed a solid first-up effort at Ascot where 7. Desert Dancing proved stronger, with the mare then heading back to the trials on November 24 to tick over; she recorded back-to-back wins in July before a Belmont placing.

1. Bartime got the distance rise he wanted when beating Auto Cruise a fortnight ago, and while the runner may turn the tables here, this gelding is racing well and continues to make his own luck on speed.

Selections: 9, 8, 7, 1

Race 7 - 3:40PM Schweppes Handicap Tips (1400m)

It’s a very competitive opening leg to the quaddie and you’d need to go wide here, and it’s not clear where the chances end, although the two best horses in the race may be 2. Our Paladin Al and 3. Redback Flyer with both resuming.

Each galloper is likely to furnish and improve over more ground as their campaigns wear on, but they are classy, and Our Paladin hasn’t been seen at the trials after showing strong potential in his first campaign which ended with a Listed second in the Aquanita Stakes behind Arcadia Park who won again at Listed level two weeks later.

Betting is likely to be your best guide with how forward he is fresh, as is the case with Redback Flyer, although we have seen him in two November trials that were both very cold hit-outs, and he also contested the Aquanita Stakes in winter which was a fourth-place finish.

He has always been a horse that has shown above-average ability.

Forgive 6. Skytalker’s Railway Stakes Day failure with an elevated heart rate detected afterwards, and there was plenty of merit to the fresh victory, while 5. Fifth Essence is another lightly raced type resuming who showed talent in a second campaign where he won three races.

Selections: 2, 3, 6, 5.

Race 8 - 4:18PM G.A. Towton Cup Tips (2200m)

A number of these come through a messy AJ Scahill lead-up on November 22, and one of the more unlucky runners in that 2100m affair was 8. Fear The Wind, who found significant trouble in the run home when blocked until the 100m and now rises slightly in trip, which is a plus.

His record at 2200m reads five wins and two thirds from eight attempts, with his latest try at the journey resulting in a stakes placing on heavy ground, and over 2300m in March he was narrowly beaten in the Listed Pinjarra Cup.

Another at a price is 12. Lavalier, who has been only fair in two WA runs for Neville Parnham, but his 2000m-plus form for James Cummings includes a fourth in a Queensland Derby and a third in a South Australian Derby, while earlier he was Group 3 placed and runner-up behind the smart Sheeza Hustler.

All of that form suggests he is more than capable of featuring in this.

Leading the market is 10. Forever Boy, a lightly raced Bob Peters galloper backing up from last Saturday’s 1800m win, and while the form from that race may be questionable, he is more progressive than most, while 3. Grand Pierro is an interstate visitor worth respecting given this is the easiest race he has contested in some time and, as recently as September, he finished third behind Half Yours, the subsequent Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner.

Selections: 8, 12, 10, 3.

Race 9 - 5:00PM Tabtouch – Northerly Stakes Tips (1800m)

It has long been a strong race for three-year-olds, who have produced 19 past Northerly Stakes winners including six of the last 15, and 15. King Of Light’s WA Guineas triumph only strengthens his profile under the weight-for-age conditions where he carries just 52kg.

The unbeaten galloper from the Daniel Morton yard also retains William Pike and has displayed a potent finishing burst in all five appearances, while stretching that brilliance to a mile at his latest win which was the only query heading into that Group 2 assignment and he handled it with authority.

The money continues to come, he maps for another soft run, and he shapes as one of the more popular Northerly favourites in recent seasons.

Bob Peters has an imposing record in this race with seven past winners of the 1800m WFA feature, and his cerise and white colours are carried by both Diamond Scene and 11. Cosmic Crusader, with the latter rebounding sharply to a high-rating Listed win on November 22 following two short-priced defeats that ultimately cost him a Railway Stakes berth he may have started favourite for.

Cosmic Crusader has genuine X-factor and still feels untapped, while 4. Apulia makes strong appeal as a value alternative after two confident wins since a 12-month layoff with the rise to 1800m ideal now third-up, and 14. Admiration Express isn’t setting the world on fire but had no luck fresh, was plain second-up, improved with a respectable Railway effort, and did run second in this race last year. Maybe a bolter for the exotics.

Selections: 15, 11, 4, 14.

Race 10 - 5:42PM Share Bets With Tabtouch Bet Loop Tips (1000m)

One of the more open races on the program, and you should respect any money for 1. Devine Belief, who resumes without a trial but owns a strong fresh record and has three wins and two placings over the Ascot 1000m for the David Harrison yard.

Via her last two fresh performances she was runner-up to Joker’s Grin, the best sprinter in Western Australia, while in her latest first-up run she finished second to Rope Them In, who was among the state’s top handful of gallopers, and those form lines are clearly good enough for this.

A big weight over 1000m isn’t a concern, and she has a strong senior rider in Brad Rawiller aboard.

5. All Play needs to lift but could improve third-up, and while his return miss can be forgiven after he played up in the barriers and pulled hard, he wasn’t far away second-up on October 25; has been kept on the fresh side since, his strike rate is otherwise solid, and there was some decent summer form last season.

Some of these come from the November 15 sprint won by 9. Jazz Session in a brave showing, and one she held off was 10. Black Ora, who could be popular with William Pike engaged.

Selections: 1, 5, 9, 10.
