Despite that, he isn’t being asked to give away the weight he ordinarily would under handicap conditions.

His Bendigo Cup Day return was strong, and the form out of that race has held up well enough.

With metro wins and a decent strike rate already on the board, this is another very suitable race for Harry’s Yacht.

Ballarat Favourite - Race 5 No. 7 You're Two Vain

You’re Two Vain remains an intriguing runner at this stage of his preparation.

This is clearly his toughest test so far, yet he has handled every previous rise in grade with authority.

That was evident when he made his first metro appearance at Caulfield Heath on November 19 after attracting strong market support.

The son of Magnus arrived there off a fast-run event first up and extended his unbeaten record to four.

His autumn form lines read well, including a comfortable victory over Vain Champagne who later scored at Caulfield, and while he draws wide he has proven a bomb-proof on-speed type who can absorb any tempo and accelerate when required.

Ballarat Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 2 Royal Flare

Brendan McCarthy appears to have a promising galloper in Royal Flare.

He was ridden confidently on debut at Ballarat and justified that approach when travelling comfortably throughout despite covering ground on a Heavy track.

That maiden has since produced a subsequent winner which adds further merit to the performance.

He was kept up to the mark with a Caulfield Heath trial win on November 20 which should bring him on nicely.

The rise to 1400m for this Class 3 set-weights contest presents a tougher challenge, but he profiles as one of the more progressive runners here and several key rivals have already shown their ceiling.

Ballarat Volkswagen Tonks Plate Tips (Race 7)

Ballarat Value Bet - Race 7 No. 5 Contemporary

Contemporary makes his stable debut for Lindsey Smith.

His Geelong jump-out on November 27 suggested he has settled in well and is forward enough to produce a competitive fresh run.

The ex-Godolphin gelding owns solid first-up credentials, with his last two fresh outings coming at stakes level where he performed admirably.

He is versatile across all ground, having handled Good, Soft and Heavy surfaces throughout his career.

With the 2kg claim for Luke Cartwright he is attractively weighted at 55.5kg and maps to secure a soft run from barrier one.

Ballarat Feature Bet - Race 9 No. 6 Saint George

A key question for the Ballarat Cup is whether the weight swing on Kingswood is enough for Saint George to reverse their Flemington result.

The Ciaron Maher-trained import meets that rival 1.5kg better off for the narrow Melbourne Cup Day defeat.

Third up and rising to 2000m looks an ideal platform for him to produce a peak performance.

His Cranbourne jump out on November 24 showed he is ticking over beautifully ahead of this assignment.

Having produced two strong runs this campaign and with overseas form exclusively at 2000m or beyond, the extra trip is a clear positive even if Kingswood may hold the tactical edge, leaving him a leading contender with further improvement likely.
