Betting Account Restrictions

Over time, you might notice that your betting account has been placed with restrictions - we outline possible reasons for this and how you can potentially settle any issues.

A restricted betting account can be frustrating. It often means smaller maximum bets or limited access to certain markets. Bookmakers usually restrict accounts for business or risk management reasons.

Below is what it means if you’re restricted, why it happens and what you can do about it.

What Is a Restricted Betting Account?

A restricted betting account is one where the bookmaker limits some or all aspects of your wagering.

You might see messages such as “maximum stake allowed is $X,” or find that certain markets or promotions are unavailable. This doesn’t always mean a ban; you can still place bets, but with conditions set by the bookmaker.

Why Do Bookmakers Impose Restrictions?

  • Consistent Winning: Bookies track accounts that generate steady profits or regularly beat the closing odds. They may reduce stakes to manage risk.

  • Arbitrage or Bonus Abuse: Bettors who exploit promotions or bet on sure-thing overlaps between bookmakers can be flagged.

  • Unusual Betting Patterns: Focusing on obscure markets with high stakes raises red flags.

  • Responsible Gambling Concerns: Occasionally, restrictions occur if there’s a pattern of potentially harmful betting.

How to Resolve or Appeal Restrictions

  • Contact Customer Support: Politely ask for the reason. Sometimes it’s a misunderstanding or incomplete verification.

  • Meet Minimum Bet Laws (Racing): In some Australian states, bookmakers must accept minimum bets on racing. You can insist they honour this if you’re restricted below the legal threshold.

  • Withdraw and Move On: If the restriction remains, it may be practical to bet elsewhere.

  • Avoid Future Restrictions: Spread your betting across multiple bookies, vary your betting patterns, and mix occasional multis or casual bets to appear more “recreational.”
