Betting on Cancelled matches

It's rare, but there can be cases where you've bet on a match that ends up being cancelled for one reason or another - read on below for information on how this matter is settled.

Betting on a match that ends up postponed or canceled can be frustrating. Many punters wonder if they’ll receive a refund or if their bet stands.

Australian bookmakers have clear rules for these scenarios so that customers are treated fairly. Below is an overview of what usually happens when an event you’ve bet on is called off and how different situations are handled.

Note - While most decisions are usually unanimous, it's important to check your bookmakers' terms and conditions for specific policies regarding cancelled matches.

Bookmaker Policies for Cancelled Matches

Outright Cancellation

If a match is cancelled before it starts and not played soon after, the bet is typically voided and your stake is refunded. Some bookmakers allow a short window (like 24–48 hours) for the match to be rescheduled. If it’s not played within that time, you receive your money back.

Abandoned Partway

If the match starts but is abandoned, bookmakers look at whether the league or governing body declared a result. If an official result is recognised (for example, in cricket with certain overs completed), bets on decided outcomes might stand. Otherwise, most bets are voided and refunded.

Multi-Bets (Accumulators)

If one leg of a multi-bet is canceled, that leg is usually voided and treated as if it never existed in the multi. The remaining legs stand and the multi is recalculated at adjusted odds. Same Game Multi bets may differ, as some bookmakers cancel the entire bet if one leg is void.

Refunds and Voiding

When a bet is voided, the stake is returned to your account. If a match is quickly rescheduled (within a day or two) and the bookmaker’s rules permit, the bet might still stand instead of being void. Check your bookmaker’s terms to confirm.

Sport-Specific Nuances

  • Soccer/AFL/NRL: Games typically must finish on the same calendar day or by a short extension. Otherwise, bets are voided.

  • Tennis: A rain delay is normal. If the match is completed later in the tournament, the bet remains active.

  • Racing: If a race meeting is abandoned, most day-of bets are refunded. Future (ante-post) bets might carry over if the race is rescheduled.
