Richmond vs Adelaide Crows AFL Round 9 Tips - Richmond’s joy to be short lived as Crows swoop

In AFL 2026 Round 9, Richmond faces a formidable Adelaide Crows lineup poised to capitalize on their return to winning form. Despite breaking a long drought in Round 8, the Tigers are significant underdogs against a disciplined Crows team, who have a better season record and are bolstered by key returns like Jordan Dawson. The Crows’ midfield efficiency and defensive focus give them the edge, with the recommendation to back Adelaide and consider the under on total points, given both sides' defensive tendencies.

Richmond vs Adelaide Crows, Round 9 2026 - Expert Prediction

Richmond’s winning feeling will be short lived with an Adelaide Crows side poised to take full advantage when the two sides meet in Round 9.

The Tigers broke through for their first victory of the year when they knocked over West Coast in Round 8 but face a stiff task against the Crows, who will be out to build on their win-loss record of 4-4.

The Crows snatched victory from their cross-town rivals, Port Adelaide, last weekend and head in as firm favourites against a Tigers side whose losses this year have been by an average margin of 51 points, ballooning out to 61 against finalists from last season.

With Jordan Dawson returning and Callum Ah Chee also in the frame for selection, the Crows will have too many answers in the middle and at ground level, with Izak Rankine, Ben Keays and Josh Rachele all likely to pose headaches for the Tigers.

Richmond’s are some chance to stay in touch if they bring the effort, pressure and contest that was on display last weekend but limiting scores will be tricky, particularly given the fact they they will come under lots of inside 50 pressure in their backline.

With the Tigers struggling to generate consistent midfield supply against a Crows outfit that are cleaner and more efficient with ball in hand, the task at hand will be too big, while Jordan Dawson will make a successful return to the side.

With both sides having an emphasis on defence and part of some low totals this season, take the total points under.

  • Adelaide were 68-point winners at the MCG the last time the two sides met
  • Jordan Dawson has had 25+ disposals in four of his past five matches against Richmond
  • Josh Rachele has kicked nine goals from his past four matches against non-finalists from last season
  • Adelaide are averaging 85 points per game this season, while Richmond are averaging 65

Head to Head Stats

Adelaide were 68-point winners the last time the two sides met with that coming in Round 16 last season at the MCG. The Tigers won four of five prior to that meeting against the Crows.

Notable player performances in the recent head to heads have come from;
  • Jordan Dawson (Crows)- 25+ disposals in four of his past five against Richmond, while he had 24 in the other
  • Rory Laird (Crows)- 25+ in his past 10 against the Tigers

Richmond Form Analysis

Richmond notched up their first win of the season with an 11-point victory over the West Coast Eagles in Perth in what was a see-sawing match. They went down in the inside 50 count (48-64) but defended well before coming up clutch with three of the last four goals.

Jack Ross (29 disposals) and Kane McAuliffe (28) found plenty of the football, while Jonty Faull, Seth Campbell and Noah Balta converted well with three goals spiece.

After going down by four points to Carlton in the Opening Round, an elusive win seemed out of reach, dropping six straight by an average margin of 60 points. They have been hit hard by injuries, which is far from ideal with a young and developing list.

Jayden Short has played seven of eight matches this season and is the only Tiger to average 25 disposals per game. Opportunities up forward have been limited with Richmond averaging just 65 points per game in 2026. Seth Campbell leads the goalkicking tally with 11 majors from eight matches in 2026.

Adelaide Crows Form Analysis

Adelaide sit with a win-loss record of 4-4 and responded to a 52-point loss at the hands of the Brisbane Lions in Round 7 with a one-point win over the Power in Round 8. While the Crows seem to be well off their 2025 form that saw them end the home and away season with an 18-5 win-loss record, they have faced a tough fixture and their other losses have been by eight points or less.

The Crows game style remains built around defence and efficiency rather than volume. They rank lower for disposals but defend well and will be out to convert more of their opportunities up forward after failing to capitalise on their inside 50 dominance last weekend, which read 59-39 in the 76-75 scoreline.

Ben Keays (three goals), Josh Rachele and Toby Murray (two apiece) were the multiple goalkickers, while Wayne Milera and Sam Berry had a team-high 29 disposals. Milera heads the Crows disposal winners this year, averaging just over 25 per game.
