North Melbourne Kangaroos vs Sydney Swans, Round 9 2026 - Expert Prediction

North Melbourne have won four games this year and showed genuine fight against Geelong for three quarters. Sydney have won seven. This is not a coin flip.
The Swans are the form team in the competition and it isn't close. They are averaging 125.4 pts over their last five games while conceding just 68.6. Their attack rating of +14.6, defence of +8.6 and overall of +23.2 are numbers that put them in a class of their own right now. The model has them by 29.2 pts with the market sitting at 27.5. At 1-39 we are getting a marginally better price than the line while still accounting for North being competitive for a half as they were against Geelong.

Sydney generate 64.5 Inside 50s per game to the Kangaroos defensive concession of 52.0. They win the Disposals count by +75.8 against the Roos' defence, rack up 68.5 Points from Turnovers and their Intercept advantage of +18.4 tells the story of what happens when North tries to push the ball through their lines. Malcolm Rosas Jnr was unplayable against Melbourne last week with seven goals and the Swans' forward structure is built to manufacture exactly that kind of output on repeat.

North showed enough against Geelong to earn some respect. Tristan Xerri was extraordinary with 26 contested possessions and 14 Clearances and the Roos stayed within a goal entering the last quarter. But they were then outscored by nine goals in the final term as the class gap told. Sydney won't have Geelong's late-game wobbles and their efficiency Inside 50 at 47.5% against North's defensive conversion of 46.6% is a mismatch that compounds over four quarters. The Game Total at 193.5 is too high. North are averaging 95.2 pts over their last five and Sydney won't need to push triple figures to win this one comfortably.

Take Sydney to win by 1-39 pts and the Game Total to go Under 193.5. Luke Parker 25+ Disposals and the goal multi of Jack Darling, Tom Papley and Jake Lloyd all to kick a goal at $3.25 are the top player props.

  • Sydney are averaging 125.4 pts over their last five games while conceding just 68.6, a combined differential of +56.8 that is the best in the competition by a significant margin.
  • North Melbourne have lost their last 10 meetings with Sydney by an average margin of 44.5 pts, including losses of 65 pts and 79 pts in the last two seasons.
  • Sydney generate 64.5 Inside 50s per game to North's 52.0 on defence, a +12.5 advantage that directly translates to the Swans' scoring volume.
  • North were outscored nine goals to two in the final quarter against Geelong after being within a goal at the last change, the fitness and class gap a recurring problem against top-end opposition.

Head to Head Stats

Sydney have won all 10 of their last 10 meetings with North Melbourne with an average winning margin of 44.5 pts. The Swans hold a 10-1 advantage at Marvel Stadium and a 96-74 lead in the all-time head-to-head. The most recent four results were losses of 31 pts, 65 pts and 79 pts for the Roos, with the closest of those being a 3 pt loss back in Round 10 2023.

North Melbourne Kangaroos Form Analysis

North Melbourne challenged Geelong at GMHBA Stadium for three competitive quarters before a nine-goal final term buried them by 49 pts. Trailing by just four points with under half a quarter remaining, the Roos were undone by a costly error from Griffin Logue that led directly to a Shannon Neale goal right on the siren, opening the floodgates.

Tristan Xerri was exceptional with 26 contested possessions and 14 Clearances, setting an AFL record for a ruck in a single game. Jy Simpkin's tag on Bailey Smith was effective, holding the Cats gun to 26 Disposals. Nick Larkey reached 300 career goals but was quiet otherwise, and if Harry Sheezel is tagged again by a quality opponent this week, the Roos will need others to step up in his absence.

Sydney Swans Form Analysis

Sydney accounted for Melbourne by 17 pts in a rollicking SCG clash that was tighter than the Swans would have liked but showcased their depth of match-winners. Malcolm Rosas Jnr was the story, booting seven goals in a career-defining performance that included five before half-time. Isaac Heeney fought through calf soreness to finish with 33 Disposals and Brodie Grundy dominated the ruck against Max Gawn with 45 Hitouts in his 250th game.

The Swans dominated territory with 63 Inside 50s and their Points from Turnovers of 68.5 per game on the season continued to be a weapon. Melbourne launched a genuine late challenge to get within 11 pts but Rosas Jnr killed the contest with back-to-back goals. At 7-1, Sydney are operating with genuine depth across every line.
