Proxima Dea has produced a courageous performance to win the $1 million Group 1 VRC Oaks at Flemington on Thursday, November 5, extending her unbeaten record to six and giving trainer David Payne and jockey Zac Lloyd another major spring success.

Forced to race wide without cover after jumping from barrier 19, Proxima Dea was made to do it the tough way throughout, but the outstanding filly continued to find under pressure before drawing clear late to complete a remarkable victory.

The Chris Waller-trained De Armas briefly threatened to challenge in the straight, but Proxima Dea proved too strong over the concluding stages, defeating Shameful Impulse by 1.75 lengths after the Rob Blacker-trained filly edged De Armas out of second.

Courting caught the eye with a strong late finish to claim fourth, while Quynh also produced a solid performance from off the speed to finish fifth.

The victory completed a perfect six-from-six record for Proxima Dea, who arrived at Flemington following successive wins in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) and Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), the latter against the colts and geldings at Randwick.

Her Spring Champion Stakes form had already received a significant boost when Stormy Marco, who finished behind her at Randwick, returned to Flemington to win Saturday's Victoria Derby (2500m).

The daughter of Tarzino is a full sister to 2022 Queensland Oaks winner Gypsy Goddess, with both fillies out of the Redoute's Choice mare Invisible Coin, making her latest Group 1 triumph another significant chapter for the family.

For Lloyd, the Oaks delivered his maiden Group 1 victory at Flemington, just two days after breaking through for his first winner at the famous racecourse aboard Peyton on Melbourne Cup Day.

Payne, whose distinguished training career began in South Africa more than five decades ago, has now guided Proxima Dea to two Group 1 victories during an extraordinary debut preparation, with the filly's stamina, toughness and unbeaten record firmly establishing her among Australia's most exciting young staying prospects.
