In the upcoming NRL Round 5 match, the South Sydney Rabbitohs are expected to triumph over the Canterbury Bulldogs. Although the Bulldogs boast the second-best defensive record, their attacking struggles persist, resulting in their last place in scoring. With the Rabbitohs displaying formidable form and offensive capabilities, they are poised to overcome the Bulldogs and cover the -1.5 favorite spread after initially being +1.5 underdogs. Expect the match to start as a tight contest before opening up in the later stages.

South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Canterbury Bulldogs, Round 5 2026 - Expert Prediction

The Rabbitohs are well rested and are tipped to pull a win out of the hat this Friday night against the Dogs who are struggling in attack.

Canterbury are the 2nd best scoring defence so far this year, allowing just 48 points total over their first 3 games. Their problem is they have only scored 45 themselves. This problem has plagued them for a number of years and was supposed to be rectified with the mid-season recruitment of Lachlan Galvin last year. But they are comparatively worse.

South Sydney have looked like the team we all expected them to be with their full lineup on the field. Threatening from all over the park and the middle forwards taking a big chunk of metres from their opponents. Their defence is still leaky and the application over a full 80 minutes needs to improve but they are miles better than they have been the past 2 seasons.

It seems easy to say whoever scores the most points here wins, but if South’s can at least restrict the Bulldogs to their current season average then they know they are able to put on enough points to get past that number themselves. Expect a tight arm-wrestle to start with the game opening up toward the end of each half.

Until we see more from Canterbury in attack it isn’t worth backing them to outscore teams that can score tries. Take Souths to win and cover as the -1.5 favourite after they opened as +1.5 underdogs. The Game Total is likely to go Under 45.5 and given it has been bet up we are seeing more value now than at open. Alex Johnston has scored in every game this season, still getting good money for him at Top NRL Bookmakers to cross here.

  • South Sydney have won 6 of the last 7 games vs Canterbury when they come in as the favourite.
  • The Bulldogs are the 2nd best scoring defence but dead last in scoring. Rabbitohs attack is ranked 5th and defence 9th. 3 straight games have gone Under in this matchup.
  • Alex Johnston has scored 17 tries in 19 career games vs Canterbury including 12 tries in his last 10.
  • Alex Johnston is the highest ever tryscorer in ARL/NRL and has scored in all three games this season.

Head to Head

Canterbury have won 2 straight and 3 of the last 4 matchups but it is the Rabbitohs that hold an 8-5 advantage in the head to head dating back to the start of the 2019 season. All of those wins have been as the favourite.

3 straight games have gone Under the Game Total which snapped a 5 game run of just Overs.

The Bulldogs hold a 7-6 advantage in the ATS record.

South Sydney Rabbitohs Form Analysis

The Bunnies had their first bye of the season last week and sit 5th on the ladder with 2 wins and 1 loss from their 3 games played. The most recent matchup was a 20-16 win over the Tigers in Gosford two weeks ago.

Souths scored two tries within the first 7 minutes of play but went into the break down 14-12 with a poor completion rate and a bunch of missed tackles allowing the Tigers to creep into the game.

South Sydney were outplayed in almost every statistical measure but still managed to win the game which is not something this team has been able to do over the past 2 seasons with injuries affecting them heavily.

Canterbury Bulldogs Form Analysis

Canterbury lost their first game of the season last weekend with the Newcastle Knights getting up 24-16. The Dogs sit 6th on the ladder with 2 wins and 1 loss as well as their early season bye adding to their points tally.

They are the 2nd ranked scoring defence but have struggled to put points on the board themselves and are dead last in points scored, by a margin.

The media has started swirling around the Bulldogs leadership and lineup choices with attack having been a major problem which has stopped Canterbury from making any real noise in Finals over the past 2 years.
