Penrith Panthers vs Manly Sea Eagles NRL Round 9 Tips - Manly hold their own

The NRL 2026 Round 9 match between the Penrith Panthers and Manly Sea Eagles pits two in-form teams boasting impressive defensive records against each other. While bookmakers anticipate a try-fest, experts predict a gritty, low-scoring game dominated by field position and defense. Penrith remains clinical and favorites for the title, but Manly, revitalized by Kieren Foran, have tightened their defense and look dangerous. The tip: Manly will cover the 12.5-point line as underdogs; look for the match to stay under 50 points and for Dylan Edwards to notch another try for Penrith.

Penrith Panthers vs Manly Sea Eagles, Round 9 2026 - Expert Prediction

Both teams are full of electric attackers and are blasting their opponents out of the water, however that trend will end here with gritty defence and field position winning this matchup against the two in-form teams of the competition.

The bookies expect a try-fest but as a matter of fact it has been defence that has been winning games for both Penrith and now Manly under Kieren Foran. The Panthers concede just 13 points per game in 2026 closely followed by the Sea Eagles who have conceded just 15 points per game under Foran.

The above stats give the narrative for this match and it is why I am backing the Sea Eagles to cover as two try underdogs and the under on the large 50.5-point game total.

Nathan Cleary is the best game manager in the game but Jamal Fogarty is probably the most underrated one in the NRL. Both control field position with their kicking game and make their opponents do tireless work out of their own end. If this pair play force-him-backs then this match will bog down and stay close.

When opportunities arrive, I do have more faith that Penrith will take them but manly will hit back. The run first pass second mindset of Dylan Edwards has me taking him as one of the few try scorers in this match, with the Penrith Fullback scoring in four straight matches.

  • Manly have won 4 straight matches under Kieren Foran
  • Penrith concedes an average of 13 points per game.
  • Manly have conceded 15 per game under Kieren Foran.
  • Dylan Edwards has 6 tries in his last 4 games

Head to Head

Manly won the only match of 2025 against Penrith in Round 8, getting up 26-10 at Commbank Stadium.

Manly have won 2 of the last 3 against Penrith.

Penrith Panthers Form Analysis

After a couple of uneasy weeks for Penrith they pounced back into their clinical selves again wiping the Newcastle Knights off the board with a 44-12 victory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was back to Panthers footy, controlling possession (56%) and territory (61%), running in 4 first half tries and finishing the job with another four after the break. The Panthers didn’t leave anything to chance with over 600 more run metres and winning the line break count 8-3.

Through field position and control the Panthers are not giving their opposition any chance, allowing just 13.25 points per game. No team is scoring more points (34.1/G) or conceding less. Sometimes it is just that simple. Panthers footy is back and that is why they are the firm favourites for another premiership.

Manly Sea Eagles Form Analysis

Kieren Foran, what a turnaround. 4-0 since the Manly great took over at Brookvale and even winning without Tom Trbojevic in the lineup. It was another dominant victory for the Sea Eagles when they smashed Parra 33-18 last Sunday afternoon with Foz getting his first and the Sea Eagles first win at home this season.

No one could expect a flip like what has happened for Manly this season. Under Seibold the Sea Eagles conceded 98 points in 3 games, in their last four they have conceded just 60 points at an average of 15 per game. They have scored an average of 37.75 and no less than 28 in their four matches under Foran and they left points out there against Parramatta early last week.

Manly are dangerous all over the field with Toluta'u Koula, Rueben Garrick and Jason Saab all able to break the line anywhere on the field. The addition of Jamal Fogarty has also helped Manly control the territory and force their opponents to work hard out of their own end.
