The Cook Islands have announced their 2025 Pacific Championships squad as they prepare to face Fiji and Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby. It’s a side short on NRL experience but long on passion, featuring the likes of Murata Niukore, KL Iro, Brendan Piakura, Mason Teague, and Davvy Moale.
Ryan and Jez described the squad as “thin but full of heart,” noting that the tournament doubles as vital preparation for the Cook Islands’ upcoming Rugby League World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
Veteran Brad Takairangi will captain the team, while former dual-code star Karmichael Hunt brings his extensive experience to the coaching role. Jez remarked, “When you’ve got Hunt involved, you never know what tricks they’ll pull, this team always plays with pride and unpredictability.”
Despite being underdogs, the Cook Islands have shown resilience in past tournaments, often staying in contests longer than expected. Their clashes with Fiji (October 18) and PNG (October 25) in the Pacific Bowl will give rising talents a chance to shine and possibly catch the eyes of NRL scouts.
