New England Patriots at Denver Broncos NFL AFC Championship Game Tips & Predictions

New England to take care of business and cover the -4.5 line as the road favourites, but don’t expect fireworks.

This shapes as another tight, defence-led playoff game where ball security, field position and selective aggression will likely decide the outcome with the Patriots better built for that equation.

The key variable is Drake Maye’s protection. He fumbled the ball four times last week, losing two, and threw an interception. But that came against a Houston defence ranked second in opponent points, sixth against the pass, and fourth against the run. Denver’s pressure profile is aggressive, but it’s not Houston. New England have survived poor protection before, they rank 27th in QB sack rate at 9.4%, roughly three sacks per game and they’ve still won because the defence consistently shortens the field and limits damage.

Denver’s defence is capable, but Buffalo exposed the cracks. Chunk plays happened through both the air and on the ground and once games tilt away from them, motivation and execution become harder to sustain without a quarterback who can consistently dig them out. Josh Allen ran for 66 yards, James Cook ripped off explosive gains and Denver allowed 30 points despite benefiting from takeaways. That’s unlikely to repeat against a Patriots defence that thrives on discipline and forcing long drives.

Offensively, New England don’t need Maye to light it up. In fact, the smarter path is restraint. Expect designed movement, selective downfield shots, and an increased emphasis on legs where both Maye and Rhamondre Stevenson are positioned to create explosives on the ground against a defence that has already shown vulnerability there. That keeps the total down, the Patriots in control, and Denver chasing a game they’re not built to chase.

Take New England to progress while covering the -4.5 line, Maye to go Under his passing total of 224.5 but over his longest rush of 13.5 yards. Rhamondre Stevenson to also go over his longest rush of 12.5 yards.

  • New England have the better QB and now ultimately the better offence.
  • Denver allowed 30 points last week and gave up multiple chunk plays on the ground
  • Both Josh Allen and James Cook exceeded their longest rush numbers last week v Denver.
  • Rhamondre Stevenson has gone over his longest rush total in 6 straight games with Maye doing it in 3 of his last 5.

New England Patriots Form

The New England Patriots booked their spot in the AFC Conference Final for the first time in the post Tom Brady era with a 28-16 win over the Houston Texans in the Divisional Matchup last weekend.

The last time New England went so far in the playoffs was in 2018 when they won the Super Bowl. Now Drake Maye has the chance to recreate history as he tries to lead the team to the promised land and nab an MVP award along the way.

Maye was clinical in their win over the Texans, 16 of 27 completions for 179 yards with 3 TD passes and 1 interception. He was brought down 5 times and did have 4 fumbles in the game but when the boy passes, he passes good.

Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson are operating in a good one-two punch style while the receiving group are all seeing targets. On the season, the team ranks 2nd in scoring and 4th in opponent points.

Denver Broncos Form

Denver needed overtime to secure their Divisional Round win over Buffalo with the scores locked at 30 all at the end of regulation. It was only the 3rd time this season that a Broncos defence had allowed 30+ pts and also only the 3rd time the offence had scored 30+ pts.

Unfortunately their star QB Bo Nix broke his foot after being trampled by his own teammate on the last snap of the game, setting up the kicker for a field goal that would ultimately send them to the Conference Championship.

Now the Broncos hops lay in the hands of Jarrett Stidham who has only seen 1 snap all season long. Stidham was originally drafted by the Patriots but has found his way to Denver via the Raiders. He started 2 games in 2023 going 1-1 but has barely seen any game time.

The Broncos faithful will be hoping that the home ground advantage coupled with the number 3 ranked defence in the league will be able to weigh up the restricted offence that is expected to come.
