The Zipping Classic heads a ten-race card backed by the Blue Sapphire Stakes and Eclipse Stakes, giving the meeting strong sprint, middle-distance and staying depth. Key Melbourne Cup week and Victorian stakes form lines underpin several races, offering punters clear angles on the progressive, the proven and those looking to peak late in the spring.

Caulfield Roughie - Race 4 No. 3 Chicago Blues

Chicago Blues was in the market for a country two-year-old affair on debut, but after leading he tired late and was well beaten.

Following a spell, the gelding recorded a breakthrough victory at Kilmore on October 31.

He then contested a Caulfield Heath BM64 and despite going around at long odds, the son of Blue Point still should’ve finished closer.

Being shuffled back at a key stage and held up until the 150m proved costly, yet he picked up to find the line for third.

A wide draw from a chute start and one-turn sprint isn't a big issue, and may even help with galloping room early and being able to cross at his own leisure.

Caulfield Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Different Gravy

Different Gravy is progressing nicely as an early three-year-old and has come into his own as the distances have increased.

A 1600m maiden win second-up came after resuming over 1300m, and he then only just missed at Listed level in Adelaide when stepping to 1800m.

He stayed at that trip for his Melbourne return, recording a stylish two-length victory on Melbourne Cup Day.

He settled back and came from the rear there, although a kinder draw now gives the option to settle closer.

This doesn’t look any harder and an extra furlong shouldn’t stop him.

Caulfield Favourite - Race 7 No. 5 Poison Chalice

Kingswood, Detonator Jack and Poison Chalice are the three runners vying for favouritism, with the latter two coming through the stronger Chester Manifold Stakes.

Enxuto has come from that event to run second in the Cranbourne Cup, New Endeavour placed in The Gong, Rumbled Again won a Group 3 nine days later, and the winner Apulia is a live chance in next Saturday’s Group 1 Northerly Stakes.

That depth gives confidence to this formline.

Detonator Jack is perhaps the most suited if the ground is testing on Saturday.

Poison Chalice may be the one peaking at 1800m, with the extra furlong looking ideal off that Flemington effort.

Caulfield Feature Bet - Race 8 No. 13 Alalcance

The early spring was aborted after a Wyong Cup failure, although there were some excuses in that run.

Alalcance then resumed in Melbourne via the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes at Flemington, which looked a blowout performance with the Zipping Classic clearly in mind.

Over this longer trip and with improvement to come second-up, she can turn the tables on She’s A Hustler.

Light Infantry Man may be the class runner at WFA conditions, but he remains hard to catch.

Good stats at this distance range and the potential to lead give Alalcance a genuine winning chance.

Caulfield Value Bet - Race 10 No. 14 Big Swinger

Big Swinger had market respect first-up at Flemington, and although a touch disappointing, the testing ground and straight-track conditions made the third-place finish a pass mark.

He held a big margin on fourth there, while the quinella found the best going wider out.

The gelding is talented and lightly raced, and his Caulfield win in May before a spell was hard to miss when overcoming plenty of trouble.

A previous miss at 1400m came at the end of his first preparation and is forgivable.

With natural improvement expected and a more favourable setup, Big Swinger is worth another look at a better price.
