Ascot Best Bet - Race 1 No. 3 Spicy Thang

The daughter of Toronado was very consistent throughout her second campaign earlier in the season, which opened with a Northam maiden victory.

Following three runs where she maintained good touch in some fair form races, she brought up win number two when denying the challenge from Savage Dancer at Belmont on October 22.

The three-year-old was then spelled after a third-of-nine finish at Ascot on November 4.

While beaten on her March 21 resumption, there was still plenty of merit in the run, with the filly wide and a little keen throughout when against the pattern of that on-speed race and card, yet still making inroads for a fourth-of-eight finish.

With that run under the belt and some freshness likely to have subsided, this is good placement in easier company, with a senior rider engaged to bring up win number three.

Bisley Workwear Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Ascot Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 2 Espinho

Purchased by the Gangemi stable, this ex-Freedman galloper was an expensive yearling, and the Western Australian yard has a strong record with tried types from the east.

He was not knocked about in a Belmont trial on March 16, where he appeared a little fresh, and that was without race-day blinkers, which go back on for Friday.

Espinho didn’t quite deliver in Sydney and Melbourne but was still very consistent as a three-year-old and early four-year-old.

That includes a fresh breakthrough at Ballarat last winter before finishing second to Eagle Express, a genuine city-class horse.

With a low rating to work through the grades in the west, if he brings anything resembling his previous Victorian form, he looks very hard to beat in this Class 1.

Morley Growers Market Handicap Tips (Race 10)

Ascot Value Bet - Race 10 No. 2 Hewilldous

Hewilldous is certainly knocking on the door, arriving here third-up off two strong 1400m performances to open his campaign.

The gelding ran the fastest closing last 200m of his return event on February 28 and caught the eye in a race that has produced two subsequent winners.

There were clear excuses last start on March 14 when he was flat-footed at the start and held up in the straight.

He still performed well in a race that has already produced four subsequent winners, and while there's a weight rise, this is also a drop in grade to a Class 3.

1600m remains a query, but two of his three wins have come third-up, including his last victory at Ascot in November when holding off Ladies Pro, who then finished fourth in the Group 2 WA Guineas.
