Iga Swiatek aims to continue her strong form as she faces Sorana Cirstea in the R16 of the Cincinnati Open. Swiatek, the No. 3 player in the world, has been on a roll after winning Wimbledon. She has defeated Cirstea convincingly in recent encounters, highlighting her dominance. Cirstea, ranked No. 138, had a strong start to the year but has struggled with injuries. After a relatively difficult last 12 months, Swiatek has returned to some of her best tennis, capturing her first Wimbledon title and getting back to dominating her opponents. Seven of Swiatek's last eight victories have featured Under 18.5 total games, demonstrating the one-sided nature of her matches lately, which included that 6-0 6-0 demolition of Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon final.
One glance at the H2H and you know Cirstea will be up against it here. Swiatek hasn't dropped more than three games in the last six sets they've contested. It's been a great tournament for Cirstea - she's advanced into the R16 for the very first time at 35 years of age - but it will come to an abrupt end here.
Head To Head
Swiatek leads 4-0. Cirstea pushed the Pole in their very first meeting in the R16 of the 2022 Australian Open, losing in three sets, but since then it's been one-way traffic. Swiatek won their 2023 Indian Wells quarter-final 6-3 6-2 before back-to-back 6-1 6-1 demolitions at Doha 2024 and Madrid 2024.
Iga Swiatek Form
Swiatek has registered a 45-12 record on the season and is back playing some of her best tennis, rising to No. 3 in the world after winning her first Wimbledon title.
The pressure valve was seemingly lifted for Swiatek after a disappointing clay season in which she failed to win a title. Nobody expected her to do much on her least-preferred surface of grass, but she produced some stunning tennis to take the Wimbledon silverware, crushing Belinda Bencic and Amanda Anisimova in the semis and final.
However, you can't say for certain that Swiatek is back to her absolute dominant best just yet - she was beaten in straight sets in the R16 of Montreal last week by Clara Tauson.
The 24-year-old has made the semi-finals of Cincinnati in the last two years and she's only had to play one match to make the R16 this tournament after Marta Kostyuk withdrew from their third round due to illness. Swiatek had no trouble easing past Anastasia Potapova 6-1 6-4 in her first match, extending her winning streak in WTA opening matches to 64 straight.
Sorana Cirstea Form
Cirstea comes into this encounter with a 14-13 record at tour-level on the season, but down at No. 138 in the world after spending lots of time on the sidelines over the last 12 months.
Indeed, Cirstea didn't play for the rest of 2024 after Wimbledon due to injury, while she only competed in one clay court event in 2025, missing the French Open.
The 35-year-old had a solid start to the year in reaching the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 event in Dubai and also the last eight in Austin, but injuries have reduced her to just five tournaments since March.
The Romanian, who reached a career-high of No. 21 back in 2013, is back playing some good tennis in Cincinnati this week, defeating Donna Vekic, Magdalena Frech and Yue Yuan in three sets.

Verdict
Swiatek has dominated Cirstea in their last three meetings by scores of 6-1 6-1, 6-1 6-1 and 6-2 6-3.
Cirstea has already played three matches that have gone the distance this tournament in the blistering heat - she won't have much left in the tank for this one. Back Swiatek in for another dominant victory.
