The 2023/24 Bundesliga defied expectations as Bayern Munich's hold on the trophy was broken by a Bayer Leverkusen side that were superb.

However, at the end of Matchday 31, Bayern have regained a stranglehold on the Bundesliga, and the German giants are unbackable favourites.

Bayern have responded strongly to the bitter disappointment of relinquishing the Bundesliga crown last season and are eight points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen, winning 23 of their 31 games so far.

It was always going to be difficult for Leverkusen to back up their incredible exploits from last season, but Xabi Alonso's side have done a solid job, currently occupying second place on the table.

It's a big eight-point gap to close, but anything can happen, and Leverkusen certainly aren't completely out of the title race at this stage - and you can get odds of $51 for them to go on a late surge.

Frustratingly for Leverkusen, they have drawn two of their last three, with Bayern winning twice and drawing once in this time. This has seen Bayern move eight points clear with three games left to go.

The other traditional heavyweight club usually in the mix is Borussia Dortmund, but they've had a nightmare campaign and are currently in sixth spot on the table.

Eintracht Frankfurt have done an excellent job of staying relevant in the Bundesliga over the better part of the last decade despite being consistently raided for their star players, with the Eagles third on the ladder, but out of the race.

It's looking like Leverkusen are the only team that can stop Bayern from reclaiming the Bundesliga title. However, this will mean little if Bayern do not give them a way back into the title race. The leaders need to drop points in a number of matches as the league edges towards a close, but this seems unlikely.

If Leverkusen were to stun Bayern from here, then it would perhaps top their exploits from last season. It is incredible to see that despite only losing two of their league games this season, the reigning champions are still short of the leaders, and they will likely have to give the trophy back to Bayern after a single season.
