The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to begin with Morocco facing Comoros in Rabat. Morocco, who haven't been defeated at home since 2009, are considered favorites to win, having won 16 of their last 17 games. Despite the injury to star defender Achraf Hakimi, Morocco is poised to secure a solid opening victory, potentially by a scoreline of 2-0 or 3-0. They boast a strong squad with striker Ayoub El Kaabi in fine form. Comoros, competing in their second AFCON, face a significant challenge.

Morocco vs Comoros Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

The Africa Cup of Nations gets underway in Rabat on Sunday night as host nation Morocco begin their trophy pursuit against Comoros in Group A.

Morocco haven't won the AFCON since 1976, but they are the deserved favourites to go all the way on home soil over the next month. The Atlas Lions were outstanding in finishing fourth at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and they come into this tournament unbeaten in 17 games since August, winning 16 of those fixtures - including claiming the recent Arab Cup trophy. Furthermore, Morocco - sensationally - haven't lost a home game since 2009. So, good luck Comoros...

Even though star defender Achraf Hakimi is likely to miss the entire group stage as he regains match fitness from an ankle injury, Morocco aren't expected to face any troubles in this clash. Comoros are competing in the AFCON for just the second time, while they head into this fixture having lost five of their last six competitive games in all competitions. Morocco producing a shut-out opening victory to get the party started is the most likely outcome here, with Olympiakos striker Ayoub El Kaabi a solid bet to open the scoring given his prolific recent form for club and country. Correct score backers should look for a routine 2-0 or 3-0 win for the hosts.

  • Morocco are unbeaten on home soil since 2009
  • Morocco are unbeaten in 16 of their last 17 games (won 16, drawn 1)
  • Morocco are unbeaten in four previous meetings with Comoros (won 3, drawn 1)
  • Nine of Morocco's last 10 wins inside 90 minutes in all competitions have been to nil
  • Morocco's last eight wins on home soil have been to nil
  • Morocco have scored exactly two goals in two of their last three games vs Comoros
  • Ayoub El Kaabi has scored 12 goals in 14 appearances for Olympiakos this season, including two in six Champions League games
  • El Kaabi was the top scorer for Morocco during their recent World Cup qualifying campaign (4)

Morocco vs Comoros Head To Head

Morocco have won three of the four previous meetings between the teams, including a most-recent 3-1 triumph at the Arab Cup earlier this month. The Atlas Lions were also 2-0 winners in their 2022 AFCON clash.

Morocco Form Analysis

Despite being the host nation, Morocco opted to go through qualifying in preparation for the AFCON - and they blitzed the competition, winning all six of their group games with a goal difference of 26-2.

Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz was the main man during qualifying, scoring seven goals as he led his side to a comfortable top-of-the-group finish ahead of Gabon.

Morocco were also utterly dominant in World Cup 2026 qualifying, winning all eight of their group games with a 22-2 goal difference, with El Kaabi topping the goalscoring charts.

Undefeated on home soil in almost two decades, everything is lined up for Morocco to win their first AFCON trophy since 1976.

Morocco Team News

As mentioned, it's likely PSG fullback Achraf Hakimi will miss this game and the bulk of the group stage due to an ankle injury he picked up in November. However, Hakimi has resumed light training and should be available for the big matches at the business-end of the tournament.

El Kaabi and Fenerbahce striker Youssef En-Nesyri provide an explosive attacking frontline for the host nation.

Comoros Form Analysis

It's a huge occasion for Comoros, who only became a CAF nation in 2004 and are competing in just their second AFCON after pulling a surprise to reach the knockout stage of the 2021 competition.

The Coelacanths impressed during AFCON qualifying, finishing top of their group ahead of traditional African powerhouses Tunisia. Comoros remained unbeaten, toppling all three nations in their group, including Tunisia, Gambia and Madagascar.

However, Comoros couldn't replicate that feat in World Cup qualifying, finishing fourth in their group behind Ghana, Madagascar and Mali, 10 points adrift of top spot.

Overall, Comoros have lost five of their last six competitive games, including three straight in the Arab Cup earlier this month.

Comoros Team News

Housseine Zakouani has four goal contributions in his last six games for club and country and could be one to watch, while much of their attacking threat is expected to come through the likes of Myziane Maolida and Youssouf M'Changama.

  • Goalkeepers: Yannick Pandor (Francs Borains), Salim Ben Boina (Istres), Adel Anzimati (FC Ararat)
