Cameroon faces Gabon in a crucial opening fixture in AFCON's 'Group of Death'. Cameroon is currently in a turbulent phase with managerial disputes affecting squad morale, while Gabon, though missing star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, is buoyed by forward Denis Bouanga's impressive form. Given these dynamics, the match might end in a 1-1 draw. Gabon aims to capitalize on Cameroon's instability, while Cameroon looks to assert its five-time championship pedigree. The game promises excitement and can be live-streamed via Bet365.

Cameroon vs Gabon Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

One of the most intriguing games of the opening round of fixtures sees five-time AFCON champions Cameroon square off against dangerous Gabon on Wednesday in Agadir.

Cameroon and Gabon are part of the 'Group of Death' that also features Ivory Coast and Mozambique, so picking up three points in this opening clash is hugely important for both teams. Cameroon are going through a turbulent period at the moment - they failed to qualify for next year's World Cup, while there's been ongoing drama behind the scenes, which saw the nation file two squads for the AFCON - one through previous manager Mark Brys, who was sacked last month, and another through association boss Samuel Eto'o. It appears Eto'o has had his way and David Pagou is in charge of the playing group, but the uncertainty has surely been a disruption in the lead-up.

Which opens the door for Gabon to cause a potential upset. The Panthers have lots of talent and ability, but have suffered a blow for this clash, with star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ruled out through injury. Los Angeles FC striker Denis Bouanga will need to step up in his absence and he's more than capable after scoring 26 goals from 34 appearances for his club this term. It will be interesting to see how Gabon perform here, but I'm going to back a 1-1 draw.
  • Gabon have won four of their last five AFCON opening games
  • Cameroon have failed to win three of their last four games
  • Gabon are unbeaten in their last six games inside 90 minutes
  • The last meeting between these nations resulted in a draw
  • Denis Bouanga has scored 26 goals in his last 34 games for Los Angeles FC & has five score involvements in as many caps for Gabon (three goals, two assists)

Cameroon vs Gabon Head To Head

This will be the first encounter between the two nations since 2017, which saw a 1-1 draw played out at the 2017 AFCON.

Cameroon Form Analysis

As already stated, it's been a tumultuous recent period for Cameroon, which makes this AFCON tournament extremely important as they look to regain their reputation as one of the continent's heavyweight nations.

Holding the record for most World Cup appearances by an African nation with eight, Cameroon won't be on the plane to North America last year after losing out to DR Congo in the continental playoffs last month. The Indomitable Lions were in that position due to their failure to top their group, finishing second behind Cape Verde, who secure their maiden World Cup finals appearance.

Cameroon did however have a better time of it in AFCON qualifying, taking 14 points from a possible 18 as they topped their group ahead of Zimbabwe, Kenya and Namibia.

Cameroon Team News

David Pagou has controversially left out veteran striker and captain Vincent Aboubakar, which means much of the attacking threat will fall on the shoulders of Man United's Bryan Mbeumo.

Andre Onana also wasn't included.

  • Goalkeepers: Devis Epassy (Dinamo Bucharest), Simon Omossola (Saint-Éloi Lupopo), Simon Ngapandouetnbu (Montpellier), Edouard Sombang (Colombe Sport)

  • Midfielders: Martin Ndzie (Rapid Vienna), Carlos Baleba (Brighton), Arthur Avom (Lorient), Eric-Junior Dina Ebimbe (Brest), Brice Ambina (Valerenga), Jean Junior Onana (Genoa), Olivier Kemen (Istanbul Basaksehir)

  • Forwards: Bryan Mbeumo (Manchester United), Christian Bassogog (Al Okhdood), Georges-Kevin N'Koudou (Al-Diraiyah), Danny Namaso (Auxerre), Frank Magri (Toulouse), Karl Etta Eyong (Levante, Christian Kofane (Bayer Leverkusen), Patrick Soko (Almeria)

Gabon Form Analysis

You could argue Gabon have underachieved judging by their previous AFCON appearances - they've missed out on seven of the 12 tournaments, with their best results being two quarter-final showings in 1996 and 2012.

Thierry Mouyouma's side will be up against it once more after being thrown into the Group of Death alongside Cameroon and Ivory Coast.

Gabon were unlucky not to book their ticket to next year's World Cup, finishing one point behind Ivory Coast in qualifying and then being edged out in extra-time by Nigeria in the first round of the playoffs.

The Panthers also had a tough group in AFCON qualifying after being paired with host nation Morocco, but they did enough to finish in second place ahead of Lesotho and the Central African Republic.

Gabon Team News

As mentioned, a big blow with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang picking up an injury for Marseille just before the tournament. The veteran striker will miss this game, but should be fit for the remaining group matches.
