  • Zac Lomax (NSW)
  • Valentine Holmes (QLD)
  • Liam Martin (NSW)

The 2025 Origin Series is here and we have done the hard work for you, punching the stats to give us all any help we can trying to pick the needle in a haystack that is the first try scorer of the first game of the 2025 series.

In this article we pick out our favourite First Tryscorer tips and where you can find the best value across all bookies in Australia.

We have dived into the record books as far back as 2017, when the last current player scored the first try in an Origin game to give our best tips for the first try scorer.

  • In the 24 games played in the last 8 years, QLD have scored first on 13 occasions with NSW having scored first 11 times.
  • The centres (9) and wingers (7) have naturally dominated the first try scoring category, second-rowers have scored on 4 occasions with no other position scoring first more than once.
  • NSW have scored the first try in Game One in 6 of the previous 8 years.

Based on these trends and their current try scoring form here are our top 3 picks for the first try scorer in State of Origin Game 1.

Zac Lomax (NSW)

What a debut Origin series it was for Zac Lomax in 2024, becoming an absolute menace for the Blues against Queensland with 3 tries in 3 games and averaging 169 run metres per game.

Lomax is in my top three most dangerous players in the NRL and can turn this series on its head with his connection with Eels teammate Mitch Moses running at the line in the No. 6 jersey for the Blues.

After going try-less in his first 5 games for Parramatta in 2025, Lomax put on a show in his one-game audition for his spot for NSW, scoring 2 tries and running for 212 metres last weekend.

Look out for Lomax in the air or finishing off a slick backline movement of the Blues.

Valentine Holmes (QLD)

It was just the second time in 7 series for Val Holmes where he has walked away tryless when NSW defeated QLD in 2025. You can bet that the Maroons try scoring gun will be hungrier than ever to get over the line and get the Toads off to the best start possible as they look to reclaim the shield from the Blues.

The Dragons and Queensland centre certainly has had no problem getting over the line in Origin during his career, scoring 13 tries in 19 games.

Holmes has scored the opening try 7 times in his 19 games for the Maroons, the latest as first try scorer was in Game 2, 2023, crossing in the 8th minute.

Liam Martin (NSW)

With second rowers showing up as the first try scorers fairly often, you need to have a bolter in the repertoire and for Game 1 it is Liam Martin.

The NSW and Penrith back rower scored the first try in Game 2 of the 2024 series and although he has had a little bit of a quiet 2025 on the try scoring front for the struggling Panthers, you will see the bull in his eyes when he puts on that Blues jersey.

The connection Martin has with Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary is evident and you know that the first four-pointer often comes for a common connection within the attacking line.

Verdict

Lomax is the favourite for the first try and has to be in the mix and Val Holmes has the report card to continue to feature. Liam Martin bleeds blue and will look to repeat his first try performance he had in the 2024 series in Game 2.
