It is not often that the new season gets underway with the current Stanley Cup Champions starting as long back as third favourite for the following season, but that is the case in 2024-25 with runners-up Edmonton coming into the season as the favourite with the bookmakers.

The Connor McDavid led Oilers started the season as the $9.00 favourite to win the Cup and go one better than they did in the 2023-24 season, expected to win for the first time since 1990.
Surprisingly it is the New Jersey Devils, who didn’t even make the playoffs last season, starting the year as second-shortest at $10.00 with punters and bookies looking past their injury-riddled year last season and are backing they will reach their potential.
Stanley Cup Champs the Florida Panthers and the Dallas Stars are both $11.00 to win and the Colorado Avalanche and Carolina Hurricanes both paying $12.00. Rounding out the true contenders for the NHL’s biggest prize are the New York Rangers ($14.00), Vancouver Canucks ($15.00) and Toronto Maple Leafs ($15.00).
As we have seen in the NHL over the past few seasons, there is no real clear-cut favourite with the league hitting a patch where a good handful of teams can take it out. Just last season the Edmonton Oilers were in last place after a third of regular season was played and now they are stanley Cup runners-up and are favourites for the 2024-25 season.
