Sale Tips July 9

Sale Value Bet - Race 4 No. 6 Polar Perspective

She was far from banging down the door through her autumn trial work, although, to be fair, those hit-outs were all over sprint trips and Polar Perspective is bred to get over ground.

The daughter of Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente also comes from the same family as Belmont Classic winner Cohort, and there was enough to like about her debut fourth at Pakenham on May 22 after covering ground throughout.

Switched to the synthetic and ridden colder at start two, she should have finished much closer after settling well back and being badly held up before only getting clear at the 200m.

Once into the clear, Polar Perspective made good ground to record the second-fastest closing sectional of the race when it was all over.

The slight rise in distance is in her favour, while a middle draw should provide galloping room for the Michael Kent-trained filly, who is an excellent conditioner of young stayers.

Sale Next Best Bet - Race 5 No. 2 Ichnusa

This Ciaron Maher-trained colt is exceptionally well bred, being a half-brother to stakes winner Suntora and from the same family as US Group 1 winner Tappan Street.

He was well supported ahead of his June 11 debut at Seymour over a mile and landed those bets in a race that wasn't handed to him.

After settling back and chasing, Ichnusa overcame traffic to score while doing his best work closer to the inside, which wasn't the place to be on the day.

He's since completed a quiet tick-over jump-out at Cranbourne, and the slight rise in distance looks another positive against more seasoned opposition.

We'll just have to see if the grey heads to Sale, with Ichnusa also nominated for a Saturday Caulfield three-year-old handicap over 2000m and a Sunday BM66 mile at Ballarat.

Sale Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Lofty Thoughts

His sole hit-out last winter resulted in a maiden triumph before going to the paddock.

Lofty Thoughts then resumed with a second in a good BM64 at Bendigo before failing in a Saturday metropolitan affair at Caulfield.

Connections not only opted for a stable switch, but also elected to geld the son of Snitzel, who completed two very quiet jump-outs in May before kicking off this campaign at Murray Bridge on June 13.

After beginning well from a wide draw, he was taken straight back before charging home for third, finishing only a stride from taking out that Class 1, and he'll strip fitter from that run.

Also, a trip away often brings on a young horse, and Lofty Thoughts now has talented young jockey Lachlan Neindorf aboard, who can be more positive from a kinder draw over a more suitable distance.
