Randwick stages a competitive ten-race Saturday program, with big fields and benchmark races set to test punters throughout the afternoon.

Several progressive imports, late-season three-year-olds and proven wet-track performers headline a meeting that also features an opening juvenile handicap.

Randwick Tips May 23

Midway Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Randwick Value Bet - Race 2 No. 12 Phyxius

The betting drift suggested there would not be a whole lot of intent first-up, which proved the case when Phyxius resumed via the April 27 Kensington card at Randwick.

The three-year-old settled at the rear there before catching the eye late down the outside with the race-fastest closing sectionals behind the talented Probability Theory, who had a perfect run.

That filly has now won four of six starts, including both runs this campaign, and she is not without a chance in The Roses at Doomben on Saturday.

Phyxius also showed through his short second preparation that he can settle much closer to the speed, including when brave on Heavy ground for a second-up Class 1 triumph at Kembla Grange.

Not only is it a good time of year for late-season three-year-olds to take on older horses, but the lightly raced three-year-old profile is also likeable in a Midway.

Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Tips (Race 4)

Randwick Favourite - Race 4 No. 5 Thebudgiesmugla

This lightly raced five-year-old has already built a handy record with four wins and a second from nine starts.

That includes winning both third-up attempts, the latest coming over this trip and grade when completing a 2400m double in November before a spell.

Nothing was expected first-up when drawn wide over a mile at Randwick, although Thebudgiesmugla still worked home nicely without threatening.

He improved off that effort with a fifth-of-16 finish at Gosford over 2100m, where the gelding was likely still a run short but fought on honestly.

Given he comfortably beat both Thrice and Cap Saint Martin there, who are his two main dangers here, the son of Redwood could well start favourite in the fourth.

General Australia Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Randwick Best Bet - Race 7 No. 11 King Of The Sea

With any favours, King Of The Sea likely would have saluted on Australian debut at Caulfield for the Ciaron Maher stable.

The import was snagged back from a wide draw there and, despite coming through inferior ground towards the inside, was only narrowly beaten into fourth.

All three runners ahead of him enjoyed the better lanes wider out and King Of The Sea was in front shortly after the post.

He was then well supported at Gosford and, despite not landing the prize, it was another eye-catching effort when rattling home from off the speed into third.

This appears smart placement, as while he rises from BM78 to BM88 level, there is often little difference between the 2000m+ benchmark races at this time of year and he carries 4kg less.

Academy Brand Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Randwick Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 4 God’s Window

The wide draw and potentially sticky map are obvious concerns, although God’s Window looks a decent enough price for the risk.

The import showed promise throughout his first Australian preparation without breaking through, which includes two competitive Listed efforts before a spell.

A terrific April 2 trial suggested he had returned in even better order and the Randwick resumption that followed was full of merit.

God’s Window found the line strongly there for fourth with the fastest final 200m of a stronger race than this.

There is a gap between runs, hence the May 4 tick-over trial, which was encouraging, and 3kg claimer Siena Grima has ridden 12 winners for Chris Waller this season.

Uphire Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Randwick Roughie - Race 9 No. 8 Shall Be

Despite a decent overall record of five wins and two seconds from 14 starts being admirable, Shall Be endured a poor stretch of form from winter until early in his summer preparation.

There may have been genuine excuses with his feet during that period, with the gelding racing in glue-on shoes, which is often regarded as a key and often very negative gear change.

Those glue-on shoes were removed after his December return and it took a little racing for Shall Be to find form again.

Confidence was restored when dropping in grade on February 28 and recording a big all-the-way victory at Newcastle when heavily supported.

All of his wins have come on rain-affected ground, while keeping him around these shorter trips is also the key for Shall Be, who should not be dismissed here.
