Happy Valley Tips July 8

Free Kick Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 2 No. 8 Happy Smile

Jamie Richards prepares Happy Smile, a lightly raced son of Hellbent who appears suited stepping up to 1650m for his fourth start.

There's been merit to all three of his prior performances, with the debut coming over 1200m on May 3, where he struggled to get into any sort of early rhythm from a wide draw before making some inroads for a sixth-place finish.

He improved again at his next outing, and when stepping to 1400m at Sha Tin on June 21, Happy Smile made inroads from back in the field for a sixth-of-13 finish, beaten two-and-a-half lengths when completely unsuited by the race shape.

He has been a little hit or miss from the barriers, but over this longer trip and from a low draw, there's certainly an opportunity to settle closer should he jump cleanly.

The three-year-old has found his most winnable Hong Kong assignment to date.

Goal Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Happy Valley Favourite - Race 5 No. 9 The Perfect Match

The Danny Shum stable has been a profitable one to follow at Happy Valley this season, with 32 winners at the circuit coming at a strike-rate of better than 15% and an ROI of almost 94%.

When combining with Jerry Chau, that partnership has returned an even more profitable ROI at Happy Valley this season, courtesy of their four winners together.

Chau and Shum team up with The Perfect Match, a galloper still looking to break a decent drought, but one who has had no luck with wide draws in his past six starts.

Those barriers have forced him back, yet he's continued making ground with purpose, including a fourth-of-12 finish on June 3 in a race that's already been franked by both the winner and runner-up.

His sole Hong Kong victory came from barrier one over this track and trip when allowed to settle closer and be produced with a turn-of-foot, while he drops further in the weights and again draws an inside alley.

Header Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Happy Valley Best Bet - Race 6 No. 4 Leading Agility

An outright favourite for the opening leg of Wednesday night's Happy Valley quaddie is Leading Agility, a progressive youngster from the Danny Shum yard.

He broke through two starts back over this track, trip and grade with a comfortable one-and-a-half-length victory before proving unlucky not to go back-to-back on June 3.

An early squeeze from a wide draw forced the three-year-old back, and despite spotting them plenty of ground and also being checked at the 400m, he still rattled home for a three-quarter-length defeat behind Forerunner.

Leading Agility now enjoys a significant weight swing on that key rival from their latest clash.

Barrier three and the services of champion jockey Zac Purton, who partnered him in a nice tick-over trial win on June 25, add further confidence.

Breakaway Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Happy Valley Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 11 Robot Lucky Star

Ahead of Wednesday night's program, Mark Newnham sits third on the Hong Kong trainers' premiership, just six wins behind Caspar Fownes.

One of Newnham's main contenders on the card is Robot Lucky Star, who could be working towards a peak performance this evening.

The wide draw proved costly last start, although he still got home well, and that followed an honest second-up effort when beaten three-quarters of a length over 1200m.

That distance appears just a touch too far for him at this stage, so staying at five furlongs is a positive, while his April return, two May trials and race-day runs on May 27 and June 24 should have him at peak fitness.

Robot Lucky Star drops in the weights and looks capable of producing his best performance of the campaign.

Hat Trick Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Happy Valley Roughie - Race 8 No. 1 Awesome Fluke

Australian racing fans will know Awesome Fluke as Awesome John, who was sold to Hong Kong after winning the 2023 WATC Derby.

He's been a serviceable galloper in Hong Kong, recording four victories among a string of competitive performances, with two of those wins coming this season over this track and distance.

The latest came in this grade on February 4, and he's continued to race well in five subsequent starts despite not enjoying the best of luck.

His latest ninth-of-11 reads better than it looks after being taken back from a wide draw before finding the line well for a three-length defeat.

There's more in his favour this time around with barrier four, while apprentice Britney Wong's 3kg claim provides handy relief, and he's racing well enough to be in the mix at a double-figure quote.
