A more genuine tempo and extra distance look the key now. He gives the impression he’s been crying out for further, and this 2200m assignment arrives at the right time in his preparation.

Main threats include Highvol (plain in the Caulfield Guineas but the one to beat off his Stutt Stakes run) and Savisanta (could be anything once the penny drops — maybe that’s a prep away).

Azazel profiles as the value runner capable of improving again as the distances rise.

Geelong Feature Bet - Race 4 No. 7 Gilded Water

In the famous royal silks of King Charles III is Gilded Water, bred by the late Queen Elizabeth II. He’s looked a staying type with above-average ability since arriving in Australia and continues to build an impressive record.

He couldn’t book a Melbourne Cup berth in The Bart Cummings after going too hard up front, yet it was a terrific performance under the circumstances. The stylish win the start prior underlined his progression and confirmed he’s trending the right way this spring.

Kept to his proven pattern, he brings the perfect platform into the Geelong Cup and finds a suitable feature to showcase his staying quality.

If Gilded Water can relax better in the run, he’s clearly the one to beat in the Geelong Cup.

Rex Gorell Volkswagen Dual Choice Plate Tips (Race 5)

His winning form last campaign came over further, but his fresh record at this trip is excellent — two wins and a second from three attempts. He’s had two jump-outs leading in, the first a solid win and the latest a workmanlike effort.

Early pressure appears mainly from the outside lanes, which could allow him to slot in behind and stalk the tempo. In 12 Australian starts, he’s been under $4 in ten of them and $4.50–$6.50 in the other two, so the current price around $20 looks generous.

He’s a consistent type who rarely runs a poor race when produced fresh, and this looks a set-up that can bring out his best.

With a proven first-up platform and some upside, Roadcone shapes as a legitimate knockout in the penultimate.

Drawn wide but partnered by Blake Shinn, an aggressive rider who excels at overcoming tricky barriers, Jenni The Fox is hard-fit and finds a winnable race dropping back from stronger company. She’s been contesting a pair of Group 2 events and holding her own against mares of genuine class.

Her fifth last start at Moonee Valley came in a race that’s since proven a deep form reference — Oh Too Good won a Group 3 next start, while Abounding and Flash Back filled the quinella in last Saturday’s Group 2 Tristarc Stakes. That reads exceptionally well back at BM78 level.

She’s racing consistently and is very well placed on Thursday. With fitness on her side and clear evidence she’s coping well with racing, the set-up appeals here.

Back in grade, she’s perfectly placed to convert strong recent efforts into another victory and close out the Geelong Cup Day program on a winning note.
