Cranbourne Tips October 9

Ladbrokes Tote Win +10% Maiden Plate Tips (Race 1)

Cranbourne Next Best Bet - Race 1 No. 10 Kotahitanga

Kotahitanga can go close in the opener at Cranbourne after showing plenty of early speed on debut despite drawing wide.

The three-year-old worked forward from the outside to sit alongside leader Ranarsson, with the pair running at a solid tempo through the early and middle stages.

While Kotahitanga was ultimately well beaten by an above-average performance from the winner, he never shirked the task and was able to hold the remainder comfortably at bay.

That effort produced a figure three lengths slower than standard benchmark, which is the best last-start performance of any runner in this field.

He should strip fitter at his second appearance and, provided he does not have to burn too much fuel crossing from barrier 13, Kotahitanga should prove hard to get past late.

John Duff & Co Maiden Plate Tips (Race 4)

Cranbourne Best Bet - Race 4 No. 9 Ghana's Akan

Ghana’s Akan looks well placed to break through in Race 4 after repeatedly racing well in stronger company than she meets here.

The Ciaron Maher-trained filly remains a maiden after eight starts but has finished runner-up on four occasions, including at Listed level two starts ago in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes over 1200m.

Her only subsequent appearance came in the Group 3 Scarborough Stakes, where she drew wide and settled well back on a day that favoured horses racing closer to the speed before finishing eighth.

The daughter of Street Boss is usually at her best when able to settle prominently and should have every opportunity to adopt that pattern this time from barrier three.

Dropping back from stakes company into a maiden and returning to a circuit that should suit her racing style, Ghana’s Akan looks the clear horse to beat.

Apache Cat Classic Tips (Race 7)

Cranbourne Value Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Klabel

Klabel looks capable of running a big race in the Apache Cat Classic after tackling significantly stronger company at his two most recent starts.

The South Australian sprinter produced a respectable sixth in the Group 1 Moir Stakes over 1000m despite being trapped wide without cover for much of the race.

He then stepped up to 1300m in the Chautauqua Stakes at Sandown, where he raced a touch keenly early before finishing fifth behind Warnie.

This shapes as a more suitable assignment for the Richard and Chantelle Jolly-trained galloper, who comes into the race with a month between runs and should appreciate the drop in grade.

Barrier four should allow Klabel to land in an ideal stalking position just behind the speed, giving him every opportunity to make his presence felt at a value price.
