Bunbury Value Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Masamune

Darren McAuliffe’s gelding is the winner of his only previous start at this venue, having broken his maiden over 1208m here in December 2023.

The four-year-old has been lightly-raced since, having made just five subsequent starts with those efforts leading to two victories.

The most recent of those wins saw him salute by over one-and-a-half-lengths when contesting a 1000m Class 3 handicap at Pinjarra in April.

Masamune was first-up that day and he has gone on to deliver two good efforts since, including when runner-up over the same distance at Belmont last time.

The step up to 1200m for the first time this prep is no issue, with the soft going the main concern, however, he delivered a respectable fourth via his most recent wet track start.

A wide barrier shouldn’t pose an issue for a horse who is versatile with regard to tactics and he looks value to maintain his unbeaten record at Bunbury.

Swan Draught Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Bunbury Best Bet - Race 6 No. 8 Mt Shirataku

The three-year-old trialled well ahead of his debut at Pinjarra in December, but he proved a disappointment in finishing eighth at $1.85.

Mt Shirataku raced over 1000m that day and having been spelled subsequently, he broke through for his first win over 1100m at Northam last month.

He came home over two-and-a-half-lengths clear of his nearest pursuer, with both of those efforts coming on a Good 4.

The gelding completed a double when stepped up to 1200m for the first time subsequently, where the youngster came home three lengths clear of his rivals.

Mt Shirataku delivered an impressive win in that contest and he appeared to handle soft conditions in a barrier trial at Lark Hill last year.

He has regular rider William Pike up once more and Mt Shirataku can continue his winning ways.

Raconteur Stakes (Listed) Tips (Race 7)

Bunbury Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 4 Pond Master

The son of Saxon Warrior is a four-time winner from thirteen starts, with two of those successes coming in his last three outings.

Pond Master came home nearly one-and-a-half-lengths clear of his rivals when contesting a 1200m open handicap at Ascot just over a month ago.

He raced on a sound surface that day and encountered similar conditions when losing out by less than a length as a $1.80 favourite at Belmont two weeks later.

The three-year-old was slowly away that day, with connections dropping him back to 1200m when racing at Pinjarra subsequently.

The youngster got home by a narrow margin when finishing strongly to deliver a narrow victory that day and the slightly softer conditions expected here are unlikely to pose an issue.

Jockey Lucy Fiore rides for the first time and she is taken to partner Takahide Ikenushi’s gelding to back-to-back wins.

Nixon Electrical Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Bunbury Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 14 Drakaina

Trainer Michael Grantham has been in the winners’ in recent weeks and his representative has shown up well in two starts this prep.

The first of those efforts saw her lose out by less than a length when placing third in a 1200m Benchmark 66+ handicap at Ascot just over a month ago.

The four-year-old raced from mid-division on that occasion and she was ridden closer to the speed when registering a second-up success.

Drakaina saluted by half-a-length when racing over 1200m via that May 28 success and she gets in off a nice low weight here.

The switch to a wet track shouldn’t be an issue, with the mare having won and placed on soft going in New Zealand last season.

Clint Johnston-Porter, on board last time out, is again set to ride and with a good barrier, he can take out the last at Bunbury.
