Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix 2026 Preview & Predictions

Kimi Antonelli is tipped to take pole position and win Formula 1’s first Grand Prix at Madring, with Mercedes carrying the strongest all-round package into a completely unknown weekend in Madrid.

Formula 1 arrives at a brand-new circuit for Round 13, and that lack of history is what makes this Spanish Grand Prix particularly difficult to predict. Madring combines street sections with permanent track, features 22 corners, significant elevation changes and the dramatic 24% banked La Monumental corner, while no current Formula 1 driver has ever raced a Grand Prix here.

Antonelli arrives with huge momentum after producing one of the drives of the season at Monza. Starting 19th following a planned engine penalty, the championship leader carved through the field and eventually beat teammate George Russell to secure his seventh Formula 1 victory and extend his championship advantage to 66 points.

McLaren should provide the biggest challenge. Madrid's higher-downforce, corner-heavy layout looks far better suited to the MCL40 than Monza, while Ferrari has one potential advantage nobody else possesses: Hamilton and Leclerc completed limited running at Madring during a filming day in July.

With extreme heat forecast, no previous race strategy to rely on and Formula 3 testing producing numerous incidents, expect an unpredictable inaugural weekend.

  • Kimi Antonelli leads George Russell by 66 points in the Drivers' Championship.
  • Madring measures 5.416km with 22 corners and 57 race laps.
  • Ferrari is the only F1 team to have completed real-world running at Madring.
  • Pirelli predicts tyre loads comparable with Silverstone and Spa, with a two-stop race potentially favoured.

Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying Tips

Kimi Antonelli is backed to take pole position after his extraordinary Monza recovery reinforced just how difficult he is to oppose at the moment.

Madrid removes much of the straight-line emphasis that defined Monza and introduces a much more technical challenge. Mercedes has already shown throughout 2026 that it possesses a broad performance window, and Antonelli continues to extract more from the car when it matters.

Lando Norris should be the biggest threat. McLaren struggled to match Mercedes at Monza but has looked particularly strong at more technical circuits such as Budapest and Zandvoort, making Madring's relentless corner sequences potentially ideal for its upgraded package.

Ferrari's July filming day gives Leclerc and Hamilton some familiarity with the circuit, but the limited mileage and demonstration tyres mean that advantage should not be overstated.

Pole Position Prediction: Kimi Antonelli

Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix Race Tips

Antonelli is also the pick to convert pole into victory and extend his already commanding World Championship advantage.

His Monza performance was the strongest evidence yet that Mercedes no longer needs perfect track position to win. Antonelli recovered from 19th, raced Russell directly and ultimately found a way past his teammate late in the Grand Prix.

Madrid should bring McLaren much closer. Norris has been the strongest challenger to Antonelli through the second half of the season and the MCL40 should appreciate the extra downforce requirements and flowing corner sequences.

Ferrari can also fight for the podium, particularly Hamilton, while Verstappen and Red Bull may find Madring less comfortable than Monza because outright power matters less and chassis balance becomes more important.

Race Winner Prediction: Kimi Antonelli
