Osaka has climbed to No. 13 on the back of a consistent season, which has seen her win 20 of 28 matches, with six of those eight defeats coming against Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Karolina Muchova.

Almost exclusively, it's taking the very best players in the world to stop Osaka, so can Krueger add her name to that list in the American capital?

It's unlikely, but Krueger has been in good form, making the fourth round of Wimbledon and coming back to beat Katie Boulter in three sets in her opening round in Washington, getting some hardcourt matchplay under her belt. Osaka had a bye in her opening round as one of the top four seeds.

That's some impressive consistency that's been lacking in Osaka's game over the last few years, while as mentioned earlier, it's taking the very best to beat her, with six of her eight defeats coming against Sabalenka, Swiatek and Muchova, who stopped her at Bad Homburg and Wimbledon on grass.

Osaka brings a 12-2 record vs players outside the top 50 in 2026 into this clash and will be hoping to make it past the Washington R16 for the first time.

Krueger dropped out of the top 100 earlier this year, which was a big fall after hitting her career-high ranking of No. 29 this time last season.

However, the American has regained some good form on grass, winning 16 of her 18 matches on the surface at all levels, including winning the WTA 125 title in Ilkley, making the semi-finals in Birmingham before qualifying for Wimbledon and making it to the fourth round.

Those results propelled her from outside the top 100 back inside the top 70 and she will be hoping to continue her good form during the North American hardcourt summer.

Krueger got off to a great start in Washington, coming from a set down to beat Katie Boulter 3-6 6-2 6-2 to move into the second round.
