Now with Game 2 this Wednesday we have pulled apart the team lists and game play options to deliver the best value picks for First & Anytime Tryscorers.
Not only is it important to know the trends around who scores tries at Origin level, it is important to know how the game is expected to play out based on tactics, strengths and weaknesses, and much more. We have done the hard work for you, so sit back and relax while we deliver the goods!
In this article we pick out our favourite First Tryscorer and Anytime Tryscorer tips and where you can find the best value across all bookies in Australia.
- In the 25 games played in the last 8 years, QLD have scored first on 13 occasions with NSW having scored first 12 times.
- The centres (9) and wingers (8) have naturally dominated the first try scoring category, second-rowers have scored on 4 occasions with no other position scoring first more than once.
- QLD have scored the first try in 5 of the last 8 Game 2’s despite only winning 2 of those matches.
Based on these trends and their current try scoring form here are our top 3 picks for the first try scorer in State of Origin Game 2.
Check out our Game 2 Match Predictions and Man of the Match picks.
Zac Lomax (NSW)
3 tries in 3 games in his debut Origin series last year, 2 tries to start the series this year, the guy is a machine. Lomax scored the opening try in Game 1 and we are backing him to do it again in Game 2.
The match will be played at Optus Stadium in Perth where NSW have absolutely dominated QLD in the two matches played there. Blues wingers have scored two tries in both of the games which have finished with big scorelines in their favour.
Lomax is a threat both in the air and on the ground through the slick backline movements that NSW can produce. It is likely they will try to test to the defensive structures of the QLD outside backs at the earliest possible chance and Lomax is one of two likely beneficiaries of that.

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow (QLD)
Val Holmes has been a prolific first and anytime tryscorer for the Maroons for a number of years. The majority of those tries have come when he has played on the wing. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow now moves to that wing position with Holmes shifting in to the centres.
Hammer has had one of the best starts to an Origin career from a tryscoring perspective and now will be on the wing that has generated a number of 4 pointers through the last few Origin campaigns.
With QLD having a dominant First Tryscorer record over the past 8 years in Game 2’s - the Hammer is the best option to cross first.

Angus Crichton (NSW)
Angus Crichton knows how to hit a hole and even if the hole isn’t there he can bust through tackles like nobody’s business. 3 Tackle Busts in Game 1 prove that aswell as his form with the Roosters in the NRL.
Crichton is also good at chasing a grubber kick in behind the line with his 11 tries last season for the Roosters being one of the better numbers from a second rower.
With Second Rowers having crossed first 4 times in the past 8 years it is wise to back in an edge player with the value they have on offer!

Hudson Young - Hudson Young has 10 tries in 13 matches this season for Canberra but has yet to cross for a try in his 4 Origin appearances. If this game becomes high scoring, he is definitely up there with a chance.
Harry Grant - QLD will need someone to come up with a magical tryscoring play. We have seen Harry Grant do this on a number of occasions throughout his career, a burrow over from dummy half against some sleepy goal line defence around halftime could net you a tidy profit.
Xavier Coates - The only QLD player to score in Game 1 and an aerial specialist. If the Maroons are struggling to break through the line you can guarantee they will at least try to pepper the wing where they have a clear advantage. With over $2 odds it is a fair shout value wise.
