The Penrith Panthers are heavily favored to defeat the Canterbury Bulldogs in the 2025 NRL Finals, aiming for their sixth consecutive Preliminary Final. Penrith brings a formidable defensive record and most key players are in top form; meanwhile, Canterbury faces significant injury concerns and lacks finals experience. The expert forecast expects Penrith to pull away in the second half, with a total game score under 42.5 points. Key players to watch include Paul Alamoti, who has scored in recent finals games, further tipping the balance toward Penrith.

A 9.5-point line in the second week of the finals is outrageous, but that is the margin the bookies have set for this one in Penrith’s favour. I am staying away from it even with the injuries that Canterbury have.

I am more inclined to multi the Penrith win into an alternate total of 42.5 playing the under of course. Both of these teams have been very sound defensively this season and Penrith’s record of holding their opponents to two converted tries is phenomenal in the finals, giving up more than 12 points in just 2 Finals games over the last 4 years.

Expect this game to be a bit of a stalemate in the opening half with Penrith wearing down the Bulldogs and giving away nothing. They will then, in Panthers fashion, put the hammer down in the second half and kick away.

On the try scoring front any of the To’o, McLean or Alamoti are all worth a crack but I like what I am seeing from Paul Alamoti at the moment. He has 3 tries in his last 3 games and also 3 tries in his last 3 Finals games and is making a difference for the Panthers while holding Tom Jenkins out of the squad.

  • Penrith have won 8 of the last 9 matches against Canterbury
  • Penrith have held their opponents to 12 points or less in 12 of their last 13 Finals matches
  • The previous 3 matches between Penrith and Canterbury have gone under the game total
  • Paul Alamoti has scored 3 tries in his last 3 Finals games for Penrith.

Head to Head

The teams split the 2 matches played in 2025, however it is important to note that Penrith fielded their reserves in Round 26 when Canterbury got their win 28-4.

Prior to the last match Penrith had won 8 straight against the Bulldogs.

7 of the previous 10 matches between these clubs have hit the under.

Canterbury Bulldogs Form Analysis

Canterbury couldn’t overcome the might of the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park going down in their Qualifying Final 26-18, despite leading 18-14 with 20 minutes left in the match.

The Doggies lacked finals experience and losing Stephen Crichton at a critical part of the match obviously took away one of the few Bulldogs players that knows how to play clutch on the big stage. Territory is key to building momentum and the Dogs couldn’t find enough in the key moments.

With Toby Sexton returning, the Bulldogs attack undoubtedly looked better, but defensively the Bulldogs fell away against the Storm who were missing Jahrome Hughes and still put up 26 points. Not that we look at missed tackles a lot, but 59 in a final makes you very vulnerable.

Canterbury Bulldogs Team News

It was a costly Qualifying Final loss for Canterbury who likely need to survive this elimination semif-final without their captain Stephen Crichton who suffered an ankle injury. The Dogs also lost Enari Tuala in the match to a broken leg.

The current reshuffle will see Matt Burton move to the centres with Toby Sexton coming into the halves with Lachie Galvin with Reed Mahoney being recalled onto the bench with Bailey Hayward starting at hooker.

Both Crichton and Marcelo Montoya have been named in the reserves which is something to keep an eye on in the late mail.

Penrith Panthers Form Analysis

Surviving the first week of the finals in eighth has a very low percentage and winning the Grand Final has never been achieved, however, that is what the 4-time reigning Champions face and they ticked the first box with a typical, clinical Penrith performance against the Warriors.

The Panthers dictated the course of the match by winning possession by56 percent and the territory by 61 percent and taking their chances when they were presented. It was clean footy by Penrith who made just 3 errors from 41 sets and accumulated 400 more run metres than their opponents.

The important statistic to take out of this match is that it was another Finals match where Penrith have held their opponents to a scoreline of 12 points or less which they have done in 12 of 14 Finals games in the four years they have won the Premiership.

Penrith Panthers Team News

The Panthers come out of their Elimination Final clean and could even be boosted with the return of Mitch Kenny at hooker, who has been named in the reserves.
