Warrnambool’s famous May Racing Carnival concludes on Thursday with a strong 10-race programme headlined by the Grand Annual Steeplechase and Listed Warrnambool Cup.

Several progressive gallopers and proven wet-track performers feature across the final day card, with betting opportunities identified throughout the meeting.

The Daily Racing Multi brings together three selections each day, with Wednesday’s multi adding to the recent winning results.

Warrnambool Tips May 7

The Standard Maiden Plate Tips (Race 2)

Warrnambool Favourite - Race 2 No. 4 Melbourne Magic

An interesting galloper first-up from a long spell is Melbourne Magic, who has improved with every jump-out leading into this fresh assignment.

While he didn’t break through, the market respected him in some strong maidens across three runs in his first campaign, where he placed on each occasion.

The last two of those came at Sandown and, in the first of them, he was beaten in the final few strides by Illyivy, a subsequent Saturday winner.

There have also been multiple winners produced from his third-of-nine finish in July before a break.

The market could prove the best guide late given the layoff, but Melbourne Magic has shown above-average ability and is prepared from a strong local yard.

Warrnambool Next Best Bet - Race 6 No. 11 Nightime Star

Local trainer Tom Dabernig has had a big team set for the Warrnambool Carnival and it has been a successful week so far.

That included a Tuesday maiden win at big odds before a double on Wednesday’s programme, highlighted by the Listed Wangoom Handicap with the talented Oliveanotherday.

One of his four acceptances in this affair is Nightime Star, a filly who has not finished outside the placings in three runs at Warrnambool, including two wins.

Her metro resumption on April 15 at Sandown was full of merit when dragged back from a wide barrier before making ground through the ruck with the second-fastest closing sectionals of a strong BM70 won by Tres Magnifique, who completed a hat-trick at her next appearance.

Nightime Star carries 3kg less here and a low draw should see her settling closer to the speed.

Warrnambool Feature Bet - Race 7 No. 10 Raise The Note

It looks a peculiar placement with a mare who is still maiden eligible over the jumps, but there is certainly respect for this move from Shane Jackson.

The astute local trainer has already prepared three winners across this year’s carnival.

The first of those came in a maiden hurdle on Tuesday, and there were many softer options available for Raise The Note.

The six-year-old has clearly pleased connections since her runner-up finish at Terang on April 19, where she appeared to have the race under control before throwing it away late.

Raise The Note has since returned to the trials and Tom Ryan regains the ride, while although last year’s winner Duke Of Bedford is the deserving favourite, the each-way value may lie with this mare.

Kia Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Warrnambool Value Bet - Race 8 No. 8 Placo

Luke O’Connor only has a small yard, but the South Australian stable must be respected wherever it travels.

The team has prepared 11 winners from its last 30 starters, including Placo, who bolted in when well supported for a Metro BM78 at Morphettville in February.

That dominant performance came when the lightly raced five-year-old was only second-up.

Placo has since completed two searching trials ahead of this return, which is a positive given he may need fitness first-up on wet ground, especially over what could be a testing 1400m.

The gelding has tactical speed and all four of his victories have come on rain-affected ground, including a win in his only Heavy track appearance.

Mac's Hotel After the Last BM62 Handicap Tips (Race 10)

Warrnambool Best Bet - Race 10 No. 14 Eire Of Fortune

Symon Wilde has accepted with two runners in the last race of the carnival.

The lesser fancied of that pair is the resuming Eire Of Fortune, who has completed two autumn jump-outs and moved beautifully when narrowly beaten in the latest on April 23.

She did not look the same horse in two February runs on firm tracks, although she still managed to place first-up behind the useful Brandjam.

Wet ground may prove the key and, despite a slow start over 1100m at Warrnambool on debut last winter, Eire Of Fortune looked the winner a long way out in that Heavy 9 performance.

It could have been a much bigger victory than the eventual three-quarter-length margin, and the filly is bred to get further, so it was encouraging to see her class on display over such a short trip.
