Sha Tin hosts a nine-race meeting on Wednesday, April 1, with the program run on the all-weather circuit under lights.

With a mix of consistent performers and improving types engaged, the meeting offers solid betting opportunities, while Group 1 Futures Markets provide a reference point for major races across the Australian calendar.

Sha Tin Tips April 1

Ma Tau Wai Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Sha Tin Next Best Bet - Race 4 No. 1 Pi Legend

This looks a good opportunity for Pi Legend to get on the board.

The four-year-old has been honest in all five Hong Kong appearances in stronger company and finds a good placement dropping back to Class 4 grade following a fifth-of-12 finish on March 8, which was his first try on the Sha Tin all-weather circuit.

He has since bolted in at the trials here by 8.5 lengths under Nichola Yuen, an apprentice making her first race-day appearance in Hong Kong at this meeting.

She brings a timely claim and has ridden over 60 winners across Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Pi Legend is very well bred, being by I Am Invincible out of Group 1-winning sprinter Booker, and he’s likely to roll forward early.

Ping Shek Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Sha Tin Best Bet - Race 5 No. 2 California Star

Zac Purton and Tony Cruz combine again with California Star, a consistent performer on the all-weather circuit.

That includes a second career win over this track, trip and grade two starts back, before finishing runner-up last time out in a sound effort.

This appears a slightly weaker race on paper, with the five-year-old bringing comfortably the best recent ratings in this lineup.

Race pattern suggests he will be ridden for one run from back in the field and produced late, so the wide barrier is no concern.

A good tempo is expected, which is a positive for California Star, and despite another slight rise in the weights, this looks a suitable assignment.

Ma Tau Wai Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Sha Tin Roughie - Race 7 No. 8 Blasted Talent

Blasted Talent showed some potential at the trials and was respected in the market for his Sha Tin debut on December 27.

He failed to figure in that event; however, it has proven a strong form race with five subsequent winners.

Leading into this resumption, he has improved with each trial, including a Happy Valley heat win in solid time on March 14 over 1200m.

He returns to 1200m after kicking off his career over seven furlongs, which may be slightly short, but a strong tempo should suit.

With natural improvement expected at his second start this preparation, he shapes as a genuine roughie chance.

Choi Wan Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Sha Tin Value Bet - Race 9 No. 9 Nezha

We’ll get a guide on his last start form through California Star in Race 5, having finished ahead of that rival when resuming on March 3 over this track and trip.

He was a big price with a hefty impost that day, but the performance was impressive, coming from back in the field to finish strongly over the top of an in-form runner.

Prior to that, he had shown glimpses of ability across four runs this season.

Nezha now rises in grade to Class 3 company but drops sharply in the weights to 52.5kg after carrying 61kg first-up.

That latest figure suggests he can measure up in this company, and with an each-way price available, he appeals as a value play in the finale.
