Key recommendations include Dark Simba as the standout in Race 7, Off Their Perch as a strong contender in Race 2, Empress Of The Sun in Race 4, and Keane Enuff offering value in Race 8. Sandown Lakeside hosts a competitive eight-race metropolitan program on Wednesday, July 1, with a strong mix of progressive gallopers and proven performers lining up throughout the card.

Several runners appear well placed to improve on recent efforts, while the rain-affected conditions could prove a decisive factor across an intriguing midweek meeting.

Sandown Next Best Bet - Race 2 No. 2 Off Their Perch

The wide draw may prove favourable for Off Their Perch, with both of her victories coming when afforded galloping room on testing tracks.

That includes her debut win last July, along with the second-up triumph at Sale last start, where she sustained an early move in a slowly run race before bolting in on a Heavy 8.

That followed a good first-up return over 1100m, where she never threatened but produced the fastest final 400m and 200m of a race won by Next Step Iowa, who has since won again and was placed at Caulfield last Saturday.

The 3kg claim for Shayleigh Ingelse keeps Off Their Perch at 58kg against her own age and sex.

That latest victory, along with her breeding as a daughter of Shamus Award out of a Zabeel mare, suggests the rise to 1600m will suit.

Evergreen Turf Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Sandown Favourite - Race 4 No. 9 Empress Of The Sun

It's a good time of year for apprentice riders to showcase their ability, and Jabez Johnstone is doing exactly that with 11 winners in June at a 30% strike rate.

When combining with the Ciaron Maher stable this season, the trainer-jockey partnership has produced 13 winners at 26.5%.

Johnstone's 3kg claim sees Empress Of The Sun carry 1kg less than she did when scoring by two lengths over this course, distance and grade on June 3 in what was arguably a stronger race.

The lightly raced five-year-old has continued to improve with each run this campaign, while her Warrnambool effort over 2350m was another strong performance after finishing within a length in a good form race.

She settles on the speed, is proven at the trip and in the conditions, and only needs to hold her form to record a fourth career victory.

Sandown Best Bet - Race 7 No. 3 Dark Simba

The sixth-of-11 return on the Caulfield Heath circuit was much better than it reads, with Dark Simba producing the fastest final 200m of the May 27 event.

Blinkers were then applied, and the four-year-old responded by bolting in at Bendigo on June 13 after making ground from midfield.

Jackson Radley's claim keeps him at 59.5kg on Wednesday, and there still appears to be improvement to come, while three wins from four attempts over the mile is another positive.

More testing ground shouldn't pose a problem, with his only attempt over this distance on Heavy ground resulting in a dominant Mornington victory last winter.

While he wasn't at his best last preparation, his standout run came when placed third-up at Cranbourne in a strong BM70, where the quinella were both subsequent Saturday winners, while the fifth-placed Ahha Ahha went on to claim a Group 3 in March.

Sandown Value Bet - Race 8 No. 12 Keane Enuff

There were excuses first-up over the Warrnambool Carnival, where Keane Enuff covered ground before sticking on fairly for fifth-of-12 in a BM78.

He was then well beaten into second at Sandown Lakeside behind Ten Commandments, whose form has since been franked with a BM84 victory at Flemington when completing a hat-trick.

The six-year-old was never a threat on the Synthetic last time, but he now has that 1400m run under his belt.

His last attempt over this trip on Heavy ground resulted in a Sale victory, while he also won over the Sandown Lakeside course and distance on rain-affected ground last August.

Now hard fit and better drawn than he was at Pakenham, Keane Enuff appeals at each-way odds in a competitive finale.
