\Sandown Tips March 5

Thoroughbred Club Of Australia Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Sandown Value Bet - Race 4 No. 4 Mozu Marcassin

Japanese gallopers often struggle on wet ground and that was the case for Mozu Marcassin via his Australian debut at Warrnambool last May, where the gelding failed on a Soft 7.

His subsequent efforts were hard to fault, with a third-place finish second-up at Geelong before rounding out the campaign with back-to-back victories in the 2200m-2400m range.

With this being just his second campaign Down Under, there's still some upside with Mozu Marcassin, who resumes in a thin 1800m BM64 and both jump-out's leading in have been sound.

Sandown Roughie - Race 5 No. 3 Gran Caballo

This Waterhouse & Bott-trained import was honest in third despite going down as a beaten fav on Australian debut at Wyong and that winner (Laspirit Deeler) saluted in a BM78 last week.

Gran Caballo was plain last start at Bendigo, hence why bolters odds are available for this metro assignment, although he was second-up off long spell and he may have been flat as a result.

He's since completed a solid hit-out at Cranbourne without blinkers (they're back on for race day) and the five-year-old brings two single figure starting prices from his two summer runs.

Sandown Next Best Bet - Race 7 No. 1 Athanatos

While he wouldn't beaten King Zephyr, Athanatos still should've finished closer via his Pakenham resumption on February 13 and the three-year-old was well supported for that fresh tilt.

His only time finishing out of the money in nine appearances to date was a debut sixth and although the winning strike rate isn't flash, his breakthrough victory over a handy Goldrush Guru reads well.

Athanatos contested some hot maidens last campaign, with runner-up finishes in races that included Daggers, Rue De Royale, Plymouth and Swiftfalcon, who are all stakes class gallopers.

Sandown Best Bet - Race 8 No. 2 King Zephyr

It looks a decent BM64 to end the midweek program, although King Zephyr appears destined for better things and the son of Hallowed Ground is well placed to make three wins from four starts.

The Grahame Begg-trained galloper impressed on debut, where the gelding came off heels to dash late after being held-up until the 150m and he was given time after a first-up third at Geelong early this season.

He arrives here off a stylish Pakenham performance, with King Zephyr recording the fastest last 400m of the February 13 card and he maps for more favours second-up from a low draw.
