Mornington Tips September 18

Sportsbet Feed Plate Tips (Race 2)

Mornington Value Bet - Race 2 No. 5 Capital Grace

The daughter of Capitalist showed glimpses of ability last prep, with her best effort coming when sixth in a 1200m maiden at Pakenham in February. She was beaten just over three lengths that day at long odds, indicating there is talent to work with.

She resumed this campaign with a solid sixth in a wet-track 1300m maiden at Bendigo last month, making ground from midfield and shaping as one to follow over further.

Stepped up to 1600m at Bairnsdale earlier this month, she settled closer to the speed and fought on strongly to finish runner-up. That performance suggests the mile is right in her range, and she handles give in the ground.

With barrier one likely to provide a soft run and Lachlan Neindorf sticking aboard, she looks good value to break through for her first win in what appears a winnable maiden.

Louretec Melbourne Handicap Tips (Race 5)

Mornington Roughie - Race 5 No. 3 Alaa Plenty

Alaa Plenty has shown ability in previous campaigns and could surprise here with improvement expected second-up. His maiden win at Seymour last season was recorded when ridden on speed, but his best form has come when allowed to settle and produce a run late.

That style brought him a placing at Cranbourne over 1000m in March before injury forced him to the paddock. He returned last month at Bendigo in heavy conditions, finishing a well-beaten last, but that effort can be forgiven given it was his first run after knee surgery.

The Moody & Coleman yard are renowned for turning horses around quickly, and he should strip much fitter for that outing. A firmer surface would also be in his favour, as he struggled to pick up on the heavy track last time.

With Luke Nolen booked, he looks capable of producing a much sharper performance, and if the race sets up for a closer, he can run a cheeky race at big odds.

Brad Masters Plumbing Handicap Tips (Race 6)

Mornington Best Bet - Race 6 No. 3 Fridge Monster

Fridge Monster has been a model of consistency this preparation, with just one unplaced effort in seven starts. He was tested on a heavy surface at Sale in July, finishing fifth, before bouncing back with a dominant Cranbourne victory the following month.

That win came in a Benchmark 64 over 1400m, where he made all the running and put a two-length margin on his rivals. The performance underlined his strength when allowed to dictate from the front, and he nearly repeated the dose at Sandown, beaten less than a length in another Benchmark 64.

Freshened up since that effort, he comes into this race off the back of a sharp jump-out win at Mornington, suggesting he has maintained his fitness. From barrier one, he maps to find the rail and control proceedings again.

If he finds the lead comfortably, his tactical speed and consistency make him the one they’ll all have to run down, and he is clearly the best bet on the program.

Denistoun Park Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Mornington Next Best Bet - Race 8 No. 1 Another Nephew

Another Nephew has been racing in solid form of late, placing in two of his last three starts and showing he is close to a win. He was beaten less than a length into third in a 1740m race at Sale before heading to Seymour for a fair effort at his next outing.

The step up beyond 2000m looked a key move when he returned to Mornington earlier this month, running second in a 2050m Benchmark 64. On that occasion, he was beaten under two-and-a-half lengths by the promising Xtra Rush, who looks a horse of some potential.

The son of Sizzling has drawn barrier eight and retains Billy Egan, which looks a positive combination. He maps to find a midfield position with cover, conserving energy before being asked to finish off strongly late.

With rain forecast, conditions should suit, and he looks primed to notch his first win since Geelong last August, making him the clear next best on the program.
