Phil Ryan Memorial Maiden Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Kembla Grange Value Bet - Race 4 No. 12 Miss Maclaine

The first foal out of Toorak Affair, a three-time Stakes winner, Miss Maclaine impressed in a stylish trial win at Kembla Grange on August 8. She made ground under her own steam that morning and looked a natural, which saw her open short on debut as a result.

She was easy in betting late for that four-horse Newcastle maiden and failed to threaten the dominant winner, but there were still positives to take from the performance.

The filly was a touch green but worked to the line in the closing stages, suggesting she will be better with race experience under her belt.

The step up to 1300m and a firmer track profile as key factors in her favour, and she looks capable of improving sharply at each-way odds.

Kembla Grange Best Bet - Race 5 No. 1 Jacob’s Ladder

The John Thompson-trained Jacob’s Ladder showed promise in two metro maidens before breaking through in a Canberra maiden back in May.

He was spelled after a below-par run at the end of that prep, then returned with a quiet first trial before catching the eye in his second hit-out. On that occasion, he finished runner-up to Redbreast, a city winner and Group-placed filly, while Flying Orchid, who ran third, subsequently bolted in at Wyong.

His fresh run at Wyong on August 31 was full of merit, even if he was beaten at short odds. He was slow away and had little room in the straight, but once clear he powered through the line strongly.

That run should bring him on significantly and, with natural improvement second-up, Jacob’s Ladder looks ready to atone and justify favouritism.

Kembla Grange Roughie - Race 6 No. 12 Point Score

There’s always been an opinion of Point Score, who was well found in betting when debuting in a Saturday two-year-old handicap. He failed there but had excuses, weakening after leading and displaying heat stress post-race before being spelled.

He returned the following prep with a sharp 1000m maiden win but couldn’t progress when stepped up second and third-up. Those runs suggested he is better kept to sprinting trips where his natural speed is most effective.

The colt has been given time since that campaign and showed renewed sharpness when defeating Willaidow, a proven Group 3 winner, in a September 4 trial.

If he reproduces that trial effort, he has the speed to put himself in the race early and the talent to give this a shake. At current double-figure odds, he shapes as a genuine each-way chance.
