She resumed from a short break with an emphatic four-length victory at Gatton, making all over 860m when sent out a heavily backed favourite. That performance underlined her natural speed and front-running style, which has proven effective across both firm and rain-affected conditions.

Trainer Cameron Richardson has placed her well stepping up to this company, and regular rider Kenji Yoshida retains the mount, an important factor given their proven partnership. From a favourable draw, she should find the rail and dictate terms early.

With fitness on her side and improvement expected second-up, Diamantina Rose looks primed to make it back-to-back wins at Ipswich.

Captain Fenkel returns to his preferred track, having won here over 1350m in May when resuming from a spell. That effort set up a consistent campaign, where he added two runner-up finishes including over 1690m on soft ground and again at Eagle Farm at Benchmark 90 level.

The son of Kermadec resumed last month in stronger city company, finishing sixth over 1400m at Eagle Farm in a Benchmark 70, and he strips fitter for that outing. Dropping back to provincial grade looks an ideal scenario, and he’ll appreciate getting out to a distance range that suits his proven pattern.

Apprentice Bella Youngberry’s 3kg claim brings him in attractively at the weights, and the stable’s strike rate improves notably when using claimers at this level. From a middle barrier, he should settle within striking range and blend into the race at the right time.

Given the class drop and solid first-up performance, Captain Fenkel looks well placed to return to winning form.

Huss On First has proven reliable at this distance range, having placed in two of her last three starts including a strong third over 1100m at Warwick in September. Back at Ipswich last start, she returned to Benchmark 58 grade and produced a luckless yet encouraging run over 1200m. Forced wide on the turn and hampered late, she still found the line with purpose, suggesting she’s close to another breakthrough.

Trainer Philip Minter brings her back slightly in trip, and the drop in distance could sharpen her turn of foot around this tighter circuit. Jockey Brandon Lerena retains the ride and knows her pattern well, which should help offset the wide draw.

With soft-ground form on the board and tactical versatility, Huss On First appeals as an each-way play capable of surprising at odds.
