The Max Simmonds Stakes headlines the meeting, supported by a mix of emerging three-year-olds, reliable handicappers and promising types stepping out early in their spring campaigns.

Mca Polytrack Handicap Tips (Race 2)

Ascot Next Best Bet - Race 2 No. 11 Linchpin

His half-brother and stablemate Cool Memory is a dual stakes winner, and Linchpin looks to have inherited similar upside. The three-year-old was impressive on debut at Belmont when swooping to score strongly, and that September 24 race has already produced three winners.

It was an encouraging first outing for a horse still learning, displaying both determination and composure under pressure. The manner in which he attacked the line suggests he’ll appreciate getting to 1600m, and the extra trip comes at the right time second-up.

He meets older opposition here but faces a moderate Saturday field for this level. With that experience behind him, he should settle more tractably and produce another strong finish late.

If he continues along this trajectory, Linchpin can go on with it and remain unbeaten heading deeper into spring.

A1 Engineering Handicap Tips (Race 7)

Ascot Value Bet - Race 7 No. 7 Rommeo

Rommeo has had no luck in two runs this campaign, getting caught in tight room first-up and then badly held-up again on the seven-day turnaround. He was never able to build momentum on either occasion, yet still managed to hit the line with purpose.

Now better placed back in grade and stepping to 1800m, he looks ready to improve sharply third-up. That rise in distance should help him find his rhythm, and this race doesn’t appear to have a great deal of depth beyond the top few.

While not a prolific winner, his consistency is a plus, and many of his metro efforts last preparation came against stronger opposition than what he faces here. With clear air and a steady tempo, he can make his presence felt late.

Having won his only prior start over this track and trip, he’s a logical each-way play at fair odds.

Unite Resourcing - Max Simmonds Stakes Tips (Race 8)

Ascot Best Bet - Race 8 No. 3 Twisted Steel

Twisted Steel was a dominant winner in both winter appearances, starting with a commanding debut victory at Northam before stepping up successfully to metro grade at Bunbury. Those performances confirmed his early promise, showing strong tactical speed and a professional racing style.

He’s returned from a short break with a tidy trial win, looking sharp without being extended, and this 1000m trip suits ideally for his return. He has the pace to take up a forward position and the strength to sustain it — traits that make him perfectly suited to a race like this.

This looks a competitive early-season three-year-old event, but he appears the most proven and the best equipped to handle pressure at both ends of the race. His early speed should allow him to control the tempo, and he’ll be hard to run down once in front.

If Twisted Steel returns in the same form he showed in winter, he’ll take a power of beating first-up.

Reliable Asset Maintenance Handicap Tips (Race 10)

Ascot Roughie - Race 10 No. 16 Split The Gee

Split The Gee continues to show promise, having taken another step forward with her second career win on September 27. That effort was full of merit given the saddle slipped in running and she laid in late but still managed to find enough to prevail.

Her earlier runs this preparation were encouraging, finishing close up despite still doing a few things wrong. That recent victory should bring her on nicely, and she looks to be trending the right way at this stage of her career.

This shapes as a good test against some progressive types, though Split The Gee gets in light at the weights and should get her chance to blend into the race from a soft draw.

She’s not the finished product yet, but the talent is there, and at big odds she’s capable of producing another strong performance if things fall her way.
