The Phoenix Suns host the San Antonio Spurs in a promising match-up after their impressive comeback win over the Timberwolves. While the Suns are regaining form, the Spurs face challenges with key players like Victor Wembanyama out due to injury. However, the Spurs have shown resilience by winning recent games without their top star. This upcoming game in Arizona marks their second confrontation this season, with the Suns aiming to replicate their previous win. Expect a competitive game, but the Suns are anticipated to secure a comfortable victory over the depleted Spurs lineup.

Phoenix Suns Form & Team News

After a disastrous last season in which the Booker-Durant-Beal “big three” failed to make the playoffs despite high expectations, the Suns shifted toward rebuilding.

The organization decided to build a new team around Devin Booker, whom they drafted back in 2015, and the ambitions entering this season were noticeably more modest.

However, the Suns have been playing very well early in the new season and are delivering results above expectations. They are currently 7th in the Western Conference with a 10–6 record. Their schedule has been relatively favorable, but they also had some big wins, including the most recent 114:113 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

With 70 seconds left, the scoreboard read 105:113, and Booker had a terrible night (4/18 shooting) before fouling out for the final three minutes.

Fans began leaving Mortgage Matchup Center, and everything pointed to an easy Timberwolves win.
But Royce O'Neal, Jordan Goodwin, Collin Gillespie, and the rest of the rotation had other plans.

Through frantic defense, effort, and persistence, the Suns completed one of the biggest comebacks of the season. Collin Gillespie scored the game-winning basket with seven seconds remaining, finishing with 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Dillon Brooks led the team with 22 points, while center Mark Williams added 19 points and 8 rebounds, veteran Royce O'Neal had 16, and Jordan Goodwin posted 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.

San Antonio Spurs Form & Team News

San Antonio Spurs clearly have a bright future. Besides Victor Wembanyama, who is expected to be the face of the league in the years ahead, the team features extremely talented players like Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and De'Aaron Fox.

Spurs have shown in recent days that they can play excellent basketball even without their franchise star. Victor Wembanyama has missed the last three games due to injury, but the Spurs still recorded three comfortable wins.

After beating the Sacramento Kings and Memphis Grizzlies, they also defeated the strong Atlanta Hawks 135:126 at Frost Bank Center.

De'Aaron Fox, recently returned from a long injury, once again shined with 26 points, 5 rebounds, and 9 assists.

Keldon Johnson embraced his new bench role after an inconsistent previous season, while Julian Champagnie scored 20 points, Harrison Barnes added 16, and Devin Vassell finished with 15.

Head to head

This will be the second meeting between the Suns and Spurs this season, again in Arizona.
In the first matchup, the Suns won convincingly 130:118 behind a strong double-double from Devin Booker, who posted 28 points and 13 assists.

Verdict

After their huge win over the Wolves, the Suns welcome one of the league’s best teams full of confidence.

They already beat the Spurs once this season, shutting down their top player. This time, they won’t even need to do that, as along with Wembanyama, the Spurs will also be without injured Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle.

San Antonio have shown they can win without their stars, but this time I expect a much different game  and a comfortable victory for the home team.
