World No. 8 Qinwen Zheng is on upset alert in her Doha opener when she comes up against former World No. 2 Ons Jabeur on Tuesday.

Zheng had a disrupted start to 2025 due to injury concerns and crashed out early at the Australian Open - I think the Chinese star is vulnerable early on in Doha. Jabeur has returned to some of her best tennis since her own injury problems and has already won a total of nine matches for the year. The Tunisian is playing in front of what should be a parochial home crowd in the Middle East and will sense this is a big opportunity to claim a top 10 scalp and continue her rise back up the rankings.
Head To Head
Zheng leads 2-0, but one of those victories was via retirement, while the other was a 6-2 6-4 win at the 2023 US Open, when Jabeur was well below her best.
Qinwen Zheng Form
As mentioned, Zheng was unable to build on her brilliant finish 2024, which saw her claim Olympic Gold, make the US Open quarter-finals, claim the title in Tokyo and reach the final of the season-ending WTA Championships.
Zheng was forced to withdraw from the United Cup to start 2025 due to injury and was clearly underdone at the Australian Open, where she suffered a shock second round defeat to Laura Siegemund.
The 22-year-old has only won one match in Doha in the past, going down to Leylah Fernandez in the R16 at this tournament last year.
Ons Jabeur Form
After recovering from various injuries, Jabeur is looking in good form to start 2025 as she aims to claw her way back up the rankings.
Jabeur made the quarter-finals of Brisbane and the second round of Adelaide before reaching the third round of the Australian Open, where she went down in a tough three-setter to Emma Navarro.
The Tunisian also went out in three sets in the quarter-finals of Abu Dhabi last week to Elena Rybakina before bouncing back with a dominant 6-2 6-0 victory over Hobart champion McCartney Kessler in the opening round of Doha.

Verdict
I'm liking the upset here.
Zheng wasn't fit to start the season and hasn't played since a poor showing at the Australian Open, while Jabeur has already won nine matches in 2025 and two quarter-finals.
Jabeur has the game style to frustrate the big-hitting Zheng and I'm backing the Tunisian to secure what would be a big top 10 scalp in Doha.
