Pegula is backed to secure the win over Putintseva, with the American winning 20 of her last 26 matches heading into this contest. Putintseva is coming off a three-hour epic that finished at midnight, so fatigue could be a factor here, while the Kazakh has a poor 5-21 record against top 10 players throughout her career.

Pegula has won both previous meetings between the pair, prevailing 6-3 6-3 in the 2022 Toronto semi-finals and 6-4 6-4 in the R32 of Montreal 2023.

After being struck down by injury midway through last season, Pegula is back playing some of her best tennis and is looking good to go all the way in Adelaide this week.

The American has enjoyed a perfect start to 2025, easing past Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-1 in her Adelaide opener, while she led Ashlyn Krueger 6-4 2-0 before her compatriot was forced to retire injured.

Pegula put together an outstanding North American summer towards the end of last season, making the final of both Cincinnati and the US Open, where it took World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to stop her on both occasions.

After withdrawing from the last match of the WTA Finals in October to end 2024, Pegula looks fresh and ready for a title tilt in Adelaide before turning her attention to the Australian Open.

Yulia Putintseva Form

Putintseva has enjoyed a tremendous start to 2025 - it took Sabalenka to knock her out of Brisbane and she's toppled some great players to reach the final four in Adelaide, which is her first semi-final above WTA 250 level in eight years.

The 30-year-old conquered Donna Vekic and Ons Jabeur in straight sets before taking out 2024 breakout star Diana Shnaider 7-6 6-7 6-4 in a gripping contest that finished close to midnight in the quarter-finals.

Putintseva led 4-1 in the second set and ultimately needed seven match points before closing out Shnaider and securing her spot in the semi-finals.

It's been a superb last 12 months for Putintseva, who can potentially crack the top 20 with one more win in Adelaide after being ranked No. 80 this time last year.
