Mexico vs Ecuador World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream - Ecuador can handle Azteca & altitude

Mexico face Ecuador at Estadio Azteca for a decisive World Cup R32 clash. Despite Mexico's perfect group stage, their opposition lacked quality, while Ecuador boast one of World Cup's toughest defenses and are battle-tested at similar altitude. Ecuador's strong defensive unit, led by Pacho, Hincapie, and Caicedo, is likely to frustrate the hosts. With both teams fit and in full squads, the article predicts a low-scoring contest, possibly decided on penalties, and tips Ecuador to shock Mexico and progress.

Mexico vs Ecuador World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

The famous Estadio Azteca plays host to an intriguing World Cup R32 showdown as home favourites Mexico come up against a gritty Ecuador side on Tuesday night.

Straight up, I like Ecuador to progress to the R16 as outsiders here.

They are one of the toughest defensive teams in the world, led by PSG's Willian Pacho and Arsenal's Piero Hincapie at the back and shielded by Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo. La Tri only conceded five goals during World Cup qualifying in South America, keeping a clean sheet in 14 of 18 games.

And they certainly won't be fazed by playing at the 2,200m altitude at the Azteca, with the Ecuadorian capital of Quito at a similar mark above sea level. I think this is the perfect spot for Sebastian Beccacece's side to cause another ambush after stunning Germany in a must-win final group game.

Mexico have been perfect this World Cup, but let's be honest, they've benefitted from being co-hosts and one of the easiest groups, with Czechia and South Africa both absolutely shocking and South Korea blowing it big-time. They've not been challenged in the slightest and this Mexican team is a far cry from the sides that have made a couple of quarter-finals and countless R16 previous appearances at the World Cup.

So I'm backing another low-scoring Ecuadorian masterclass, with some extra value on La Tri to prevail on penalties. Nilson Angulo looks the most likely for an anytime goalscorer, but go light and I wouldn't be surprised with a 0-0 stalemate after 90 minutes.
  • Ecuador are unbeaten in 21 of their last 22 games
  • Ecuador have seen Under 1.5 goals in seven of their last eight competitive games
  • Mexico didn't concede a single goal during their three group games & only faced five shots on target
  • Ecuador kept a clean sheet in 14 of their 18 World Cup qualifying games
  • Mexico have the worst win percentage in knockout World Cup games out of any team to play 5+ games, losing seven, drawing two and winning one of their 10 such outings
  • Nilson Angulo has scored in three of his last six games for Ecuador

Mexico vs Ecuador Head To Head

These two sides met in the 2002 World Cup, with Mexico coming away 2-1 winners. However, that was Mexico's only win in 14 previous World Cup meetings with South American teams.

Mexico Form Analysis

It couldn't have been smoother sailing for Mexico at their home World Cup to date and they have breezed into the R32 without conceding a single goal.

Whether that lack of competitiveness could actually hinder them going forward remains to be seen, but you can't argue with three wins from three and a trio of clean sheets.

El Tri cruised past South Africa 2-0 in their opening game before confirming their knockout spot with a 1-0 triumph over South Korea.

Javier Aguirre’s team then crushed a terrible Czechia side 3-0 in their final group game to punch their ticket back to the Azteca for this R32 tie.

Mexico Team News

No injury concerns for Mexico ahead of this clash, with veteran striker Raul Jimenez set to feature from the start after being rested against Czechia.

Teenage sensation Gilberto Mora is Mexico's youngest ever World Cup player after getting minutes off the bench last time out and the 17-year-old could be introduced late in an attempt to break a potential deadlock.

Ecuador Form Analysis

Ecuador arrived at this World Cup on a 19-game unbeaten streak and as one of the dark horses to make a deep run.

However, those plans were thrown into immediate disarray after conceding a late goal in a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast.

Things went from bad to worse as Ecuador were then held in a 0-0 stalemate with Curacao following a record-breaking goalkeeping performance from their opposition stopper.

It left Ecuador tasked with a must-win clash with four-time champions Germany in their final group game and again, their challenge was made all the more difficult after conceding an early goal.

However, goals from Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata saw Ecuador pull off a miraculous escape, sending manager Sebastian Beccacece and their supporters into euphoric celebrations.

Ecuador Team News

Ecuador also have no injury or suspension worries for this clash.

Veteran striker Enner Valencia remains one goal shy of 50 international strikes and would love nothing more than to achieve the career milestone on the biggest stage of them all.
