Australia and Egypt both aim for their first ever World Cup knockout phase victory in a highly anticipated Round of 32 clash. Australia’s solid defense and Egypt’s key injury worries, particularly Mo Salah’s hamstring, tip the balance in Socceroos' favor. With Irankunda and Bos in excellent form and Egypt’s track record in knockouts still lacking, Australia are recommended to progress. Fans can catch all the action live via streaming platforms with the latest updates on team news and player stats included.

Australia vs Egypt World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

The Socceroos and Egypt are both aiming for their first ever World Cup knockout phase win when they square off in the Round of 32 at AT&T Stadium on Friday.

It's a massive opportunity for both nations, with reigning World Cup champions Argentina likely to be waiting in the R16. Australia have twice made the knockout stage of the World Cup and on both occasions it took the eventual winners to beat them in highly competitive contests, with Italy edging a 1-0 win in 2006 courtesy of a controversial penalty before Argentina came away with a 2-1 triumph in 2022, with Garang Kuol and Aziz Behich denied equalisers by some stunning Emi Martinez goalkeeping.

It hasn't been pretty at times, but I believe the Socceroos can advance here. Egypt aren't world beaters and Mo Salah comes into this clash under an injury question mark surrounding his hamstring. It looks as if Salah will feature, but I'm not sure he's fit enough for a 90-minute performance, so that could be a huge bonus for Australia.

While there's the usual question marks going forward, Australia remain very tough to break down and have been pretty sound defensively this World Cup - they've only conceded an own goal and a strike from USA that easily could have been overturned for offside interference by VAR. Teenage rising star Lucas Herrington looks as if he's playing his fifth World Cup, while Alessandro Ciracti and Harry Souttar are proving rock solid. I think they can keep Egypt at bay here.

So my best bets for this contest are Australia Double Chance and the Socceroos to qualify. I'm going to turn my attention to a couple of shots on target props as well, with Nestory Irankunda and Jordan Bos easily Australia's most dangerous players going forward.
  • Australia are unbeaten in five of their last seven games
  • Australia have kept a clean sheet in four of their last six World Cup games
  • It's taken the eventual winners to beat Australia in their previous two World Cup knockout games
  • Egypt have won just three of their last eight matches & have only beaten New Zealand this World Cup
  • Egypt have never won a knockout phase match at the World Cup
  • Jordan Bos had two shots on target vs Paraguay & had 1+ shots on target in four of his last five games for Feyenoord this past season - he looks good to cut in from the right on his left foot to test the keeper if he remains in the right wingback role
  • Nestory Irankunda has registered four total shots in three games, with two on target vs Turkiye - his confidence is sky-high and he will shoot at any given opportunity here

Australia vs Egypt Head To Head

The H2H is split at one win apiece from two previous friendlies. Australia are unbeaten in two previous World Cup games vs African nations (one win, one draw).

Australia Form Analysis

Overall, it was a successful group phase for the Socceroos, with the team finishing in second spot ahead of Paraguay and Turkiye.

The spectacular 2-0 victory over Turkiye set Australia up nicely, with Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe scoring brilliant individual goals from long range.

Tony Popovic got his selections wrong for the USA game and the Socceroos looked shell-shocked conceding two goals in the opening half, where the damage was done - although they were much improved in the second stanza when Popovic corrected his mistakes.

With both sides knowing a point would see them through to the Round of 32, the Socceroos played out a 0-0 stalemate with Paraguay in their final group game.

Australia Team News

Jordy Bos was on fire against Paraguay after switching flanks to the right to cover the injured Jacob Italiano, who will miss the remainder of the tournament. Bos will likely remain on the right, with Aziz Behich on the left.

Popovic will have to decide which one of Irankunda, Metcalfe, Cristian Volpato and Mo Toure to leave on the bench as it seems unlikely the manager will play all four from the start. Irankunda is certainly more effective in the wide positions where he's not being isolated and crowded by big centre halves, but Popovic seems to like deploying him as a lone striker.

Aiden O'Neill has been the unsung hero in midfield and will likely retain his starting spot, with Jackson Irvine a chance to feature alongside him.

Patrick Beach should remain in goal after a series of impressive displays, while 18-year-old Barcelona target Lucas Herrington should form a back three alongside Alessandro Circati and Harry Souttar.

Egypt Form Analysis

Egypt blew a golden opportunity to finish top of the group and ultimately had to settle for second spot behind Belgium - although they'd argue this is a pretty good draw in any case.

Hossam Hassan's team opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Belgium before coming from behind to topple New Zealand 3-1.

The Pharaohs took an early lead against Iran, but couldn't hold on and settled for another 1-1 draw - and they easily could have lost it late but for a VAR intervention.

Egypt lost all three of their matches at the 2018 World Cup, so this competition has already been a major improvement.

Egypt Team News

Superstar Mo Salah is battling a hamstring injury and although he's resumed training throughout the week, it's hard to see him playing all 90 minutes and he might be used as an impact player off the bench with 30 minutes remaining.

Hamdy Fathy (groin), Hossam Abdelmaguid (head), Mohamed Abdelmonem (ankle) and Ahmed El Fotouh (hamstring) are also battling niggles and in some doubt.

Man City winger Omar Marmoush will be the main attacking outlet if Salah doesn't start, while veteran striker Trézéguet has 24 international goals to his name and could get a start.
