Western Sydney Wanderers vs Wellington Phoenix Tips & Prediction - Phoenix can avoid defeat on the road

The upcoming match between Western Sydney Wanderers and Wellington Phoenix is pivotal for both teams in the A-League standings. The Wanderers have struggled this season, currently sitting at the bottom with only four wins. In contrast, Wellington Phoenix holds a slight edge but needs to maintain their momentum to stay in contention for final playoffs. With Phoenix's stronger recent performance, securing results in the Double Chance market with potential for over 2.5 goals seems a promising bet. Expect the joint-top scorer Ifeanyi Eze to be a key player.

Western Sydney Wanderers vs Wellington Phoenix Tips & Prediction

Could this be an early preview of Spoon Bowl? It's a must-win game for the Western Sydney Wanderers and Wellington Phoenix when the A-League's two bottom sides clash to launch Round 17 at CommBank Stadium on Friday night.

It's been a nightmare season for the Wanderers - on paper, they're equipped with a side that should be pushing for the top four, but instead they are anchored to the bottom of the ladder with just four wins for the season and seven points adrift of the top six. Wellington meanwhile are three points ahead of the Wanderers, but still have lots of work to do if they are to challenge for a place in the finals after going down 3-2 at home to Melbourne Victory last week.

I just can't back the Wanderers as $1.40 favourites here. I know they're at home and I actually think they played pretty well last week in a 1-1 draw against Melbourne City, but I can't jump on the last-placed team at those odds. Phoenix have been decent themselves lately, going unbeaten in four of their last six games, with the two defeats coming against the top-of-the-table Jets and Victory last week. I'm backing the Nix in the Double Chance market in a game that features Over 2.5 goals, with a bit of added value on Wellington in the Correct Score market and the league's joint-top scorer Ifeanyi Eze finding the back of the net.
  • Wanderers have failed to win 12 of their 16 games this season
  • Phoenix are unbeaten in four of their last six games
  • Phoenix have seen Over 2.5 goals in 10 of their last 11 games
  • Phoenix are unbeaten in seven of their last 10 games vs Wanderers
  • The last two meetings have seen four and five goals scored
  • Phoenix have scored exactly two goals in three of their last five wins
  • Ifeanyi Eze has scored seven goals this season & is the league's joint top scorer

WS Wanderers vs Wellington Phoenix Head To Head

This will be the first meeting between the teams this season. They've split the last three encounters at one win apiece and a draw.

WS Wanderers Form Analysis

It's been a frustrating season for Wanderers fans - their team has potential, but for whatever reason it's just not clicking.

Gary Van Egmond's side are rock bottom on the ladder with just four wins for the season and if they lose this game, that could be it as far as their finals aspirations go.

Following on from their crushing 4-1 derby defeat to Sydney FC, the Wanderers managed to salvage a 1-1 draw against Melbourne City last week.

Bozhidar Kraev came off the bench to equalise for the Wanderers with a header in the second half.

Van Egmond, who took over from Alen Stajcic earlier in the year, seems at a loss as to how to get his side out of their current slump.

"I think if you talk about it too much, then it becomes an issue. I think if you don't talk about it at all, it becomes an issue too, " Van Egmond said in regards to the Wanderers' ladder position.
"There's a balance there, but it's the old adage for us - it's one game at a time - and we look forward to playing Wellington next week."

Wellington Phoenix Form Analysis

Phoenix come into this contest one rung and three points above the Wanderers on the ladder, registering a 5-4-7 record across their 16 games.

Wellington are still very much in contention for the finals, just four points behind sixth place, but they can't afford to drop too many more games.

The Nix had a nice run of results last month with upset wins on the road over Sydney and Brisbane, but they've since gone winless in three, including last week's 3-2 loss to Melbourne Victory.

Carlo Armiento was on target for Wellington and they had a punchers chance late after an own goal from Roderick Miranda, but overall they were no match for Victory's attacking firepower.
