Argentina continue their World Cup title defence with a clash against in-form Austria. After Messi's hat-trick sealed a comfortable 3-0 win over Algeria, Argentina are aiming for their ninth straight victory and Messi is set to break the all-time World Cup goalscoring record. Austria, despite winning 10 of their last 12 matches, struggled to a 3-1 win over Jordan. Expect a closer contest, but Argentina's quality should prevail, with Austria likely scoring in defeat. Live streaming is available, with both teams fielding strong squads.

Argentina vs Austria World Cup Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Argentina continue their World Cup defence when they come up against an in-form Austria side in Group J action at AT&T Stadium on Monday.

It was a Lionel Messi masterclass in Argentina's opening group game against Algeria, with the little magician winding back the clock with a sparkling hat-trick, leading his nation to a 3-0 victory. That makes it eight consecutive victories for Argentina in all competitions, their longest winning streak since 2016.

Meanwhile, Austria have been in strong form themselves, winning 10 of their last 12 in all competitions and coming away with a 3-1 victory over Jordan to launch their World Cup campaign. However, it wasn't the most convincing of performances - Das Team needed an own goal in the 76th minute to take the lead before wrapping up three points with a penalty in the 12th minute of added time.

I do think Austria will provide a much sterner test to the world champions here and can get on the scoresheet. However, Argentina are a different level and the Austrians have a poor record against South American opponents. I'm taking Argentina to win, with Messi breaking the record of Miroslav Klose and scoring a record 17th World Cup goal.
  • Argentina are on an eight-match winning streak
  • Argentina are unbeaten in their last seven World Cup matches
  • Austria have won 10 of their last 12 games
  • Austria are winless in nine of their last 10 games vs South American teams
  • Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick vs Algeria & has nine goals in his last seven games for club & country
  • Austria have scored exactly one goal in three of their last five games

Argentina vs Austria Head To Head

This will be the first World Cup meeting between the nations, with the last clash resulting in a 1-1 friendly back in 1990.

Argentina Form Analysis

Argentina couldn't have asked for a better performance to kick off their World Cup trophy defence, easing to a 3-0 win over an Algerian side who had impressed pre-tournament.

Lionel Messi delivered a masterful individual display, scoring a cracking hat-trick, including two shots from outside the box. Messi is now just one goal shy of breaking the all-time World Cup goals record held by German striker Miroslav Klose with 16.

A win here would ensure progression to the knockout phase - topping the group would see Argentina face the runner-up of Group H, which at this stage looks like being either Uruguay or Cape Verde.

Argentina Team News

Gonzalo Montiel is battling a hamstring injury and is a doubt at right back, with Nahuel Molina a chance to feature.

Nicolás Tagliafico is available for selection again after missing the opener. The team again will be built around how to best utilise Messi, with Julien Alvarez likely to start from the bench again.

Austria Form Analysis

Austria got their World Cup campaign underway with a 3-1 win over Group J minnows Jordan.

As mentioned, it wasn't a great performance from Das Team - they conceded and were level with 15 minutes remaining before an own goal and penalty proved the difference.

So plenty to improve on for Ralf Rangnick's side, who are looking to win their opening two games of a World Cup for the first time since 1982. But at the end of the day, Austria have won 10 of their last 12 games and shouldn't be intimidated by the world champions here.

Austria Team News

Marko Arnautovic came off the bench and scored a penalty against Jordan, so he could be in line for a start up front here.

Stefan Posch broke his jaw in the win last week, but it wasn't a severe break and he could be fit to retain his spot in the starting side.

Verdict

Argentina should have too much class, but Austria can find the back of the net in defeat. Messi will be determined to break the World Cup goalscoring record.
