San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles NFL Wildcard Round Tips & Predictions

This is one of the toughest calls of Wild Card weekend, but when head and heart collide, the numbers lean Philadelphia.

San Francisco arrive in Philadelphia banged up and coming off their most concerning defensive performance of the season. The Eagles, meanwhile, begin their title defence at home with extra rest, elite defensive structure and a matchup profile that targets the 49ers’ biggest weaknesses.

The 49ers will have opportunities to win this game. Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey are good enough to keep this close, and San Francisco’s recent playoff history suggests they won’t fold easily. But the combination of injuries, defensive pressure issues and a difficult road environment narrows their margin for error significantly.

Philadelphia’s defence is the difference. The Eagles allowed just 19 points per game this season, ranked top-five in passer rating allowed, and were especially dominant in the red zone. Their secondary matches up well with San Francisco’s receivers, particularly if George Kittle and Ricky Pearsall are limited or less than 100 percent.

On the other side of the ball, Philadelphia’s offence is positioned to punish San Francisco where they’ve been vulnerable. The 49ers have struggled to contain explosive runs and have allowed consistent production to wide receivers. Saquon Barkley’s burst on the ground and A.J. Brown’s physicality on the perimeter give the Eagles reliable ways to control tempo and finish drives.

This should be a tight, physical contest deep into the second half, but home-field advantage, defensive depth and late-game execution point toward Philadelphia pulling away just enough to cover the number.

Take Philly to win and cover the line as home favourites despite the 49ers road record this season. Saquon Barkley to over his longest Rush line of 18.5, Christian McCaffrey to see a lot of ball going over 106.5 Rushing and Receiving Yards and finally AJ Brown to have over 5.5 receptions.

  • Philadelphia allowed just 19.0 points per game, held QBs to the 2nd-lowest passer rating, and ranked top-10 in red-zone defence
  • San Francisco generated the lowest pressure rate in the NFL and allowed explosive runs in back-to-back weeks
  • Saquon Barkley faces a defence allowing 4.5 yards per carry to RBs, including 97 yards to Kenneth Walker in Week 18
  • Christian McCaffrey has cleared 100+ total yards in 5 of his last 7 games and faces an Eagles defence that allowed a 102.6 passer rating to running backs as receivers this season.
  • A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith combined for 2,000+ receiving yards, attacking a 49ers secondary that allowed a 105 passer rating to WRs

San Francisco 49ers Form

San Francisco once again find themselves in the postseason, but this run feels more fragile than recent years. Injuries are mounting at the worst possible time, with Trent Williams, George Kittle and Ricky Pearsall all carrying issues into this matchup. Even if they play, effectiveness, particularly from Williams’ hamstring is a major concern against Philadelphia’s pass rush.

Defensively, the 49ers have struggled to affect quarterbacks all season, ranking last in pressure rate and sacks. That issue showed late, conceding chunk plays and struggling to get off the field against Seattle. Christian McCaffrey remains the engine of the offence and will be heavily involved as both a runner and receiver, but relying on him to carry the full load on the road is a tall task.

Philadelphia Eagles Form

Philadelphia enter the playoffs in familiar territory: rested, healthy and at home. Their defence was one of the most complete units in the league, excelling in coverage, red-zone situations and late-game execution. The secondary in particular is built to limit explosive passing, forcing opponents to sustain long drives.

Offensively, the Eagles weren’t always smooth this season, but the ceiling remains high. Saquon Barkley gives them explosive run potential against a vulnerable front, while A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith create consistent matchup advantages outside. With Jalen Hurts protected and confident, Philadelphia are built to close tight playoff games at home.
