Sunshine Coast Value Bet - Race 1 No. 11 Moonspell

A $30,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year, Moonspell failed to make an impact in a barrier trial at Gold Coast in December.

The daughter of Puissance De Lune jumped at big odds when eased not long after the start via a Gold Coast debut in June.

Jockey Montana Philpot had concerns with the fillies’ action on that occasion and she went on to place second in a Beaudesert barrier trial just under two weeks later.

John Smerdon’s representative caught the eye when staying on nicely for fourth in a 1015m event held on a Soft 7 track at Gold Coast last month.

The form of that race is working out particularly well, with all three beaten horses to emerge from the race going on to salute next time.

The step up to 1400m is expected to suit and Justin Huxtable’s mount looks value to breakthrough.

Sunshine Coast Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 9 Winchman

The gelding finished second in five of his seven starts last prep, including three times at this venue.

The most recent of those placed efforts came when beaten just under one-and-a-half-lengths in a 1200m maiden in March.

Winchman was spelled following that effort and he resumed with a three-and-a-half-length second over 1200m at Doomben just under a month ago.

The son of Hellbent began awkwardly when racing on a Good 4 track on that occasion, with the third home going on to win next time.

He did likewise when overcoming crowding near the 200m mark to deliver a half-length victory at Doomben at the end of last month.

The five-year-old raced on a Soft 5 surface that day and from a good draw, Winchman can complete a double.

Sunshine Coast Roughie - Race 5 No. 9 Hooks

The eight-year-old has shown a liking for this venue in the past, with three of his seven wins coming here.

The most recent of those victories saw him triumph by nearly two lengths when contesting a 1600m Benchmark 60 handicap here in February.

Hooks has registered some solid efforts in defeat since, including when fourth in a 1500m Benchmark 62 event at Kilcoy three starts back.

The New Zealand-bred galloper hinted that his next win might not be far away when fading late on in finishing eighth in a 1400m Benchmark 0-60 handicap here last month.

That form looks solid, with the runner-up filling the same spot subsequently, while the tenth (twice) and eleventh have both gone on to score in the interim.

Hooks should have no issues leading from barrier six, whereas the other obvious pace angles both jump from wide gates.
