The Gold Coast hosts a blockbuster Magic Millions meeting on Saturday, headlined by the $3 million 2YO Classic and $3 million 3YO Guineas across a deep ten-race program.

Quality is spread right through the card, with strong juvenile contests, competitive middle-distance features and several open handicaps that shape as genuine betting races. The undercard is packed with form reference, ensuring there’s depth well beyond the two headline events.

From tricky maidens early to high-pressure features late, the meeting offers plenty for punters across all grades, with market moves and race shape key throughout the day, while all weekend coverage and analysis is available via Saturday’s Previews.

Gold Coast Tips January 17

Race 1 - 12:30PM Magic Millions Maiden Plate Tips (1100m)

6. Melanite was tested in decent company early before being gelded ahead of two July runs. He arguably should have won the first of those before covering ground in a hot Sydney maiden. Melanite won a December 2 trial and wasn’t knocked about when third on December 30 behind Astronomix, an impressive debut winner on Wednesday.

Wary of 4. Splash Of Steel at long odds, despite a lengthy absence from his first campaign, as there was always an opinion of him. He resumes as a gelding and was a terrific trial winner on January 8.

9. Misty Veil was just edged out fresh before running into the smart Ice Kool on December 3. She moved well under a hold in a subsequent trial.

2. Buckeye was a close second to useful Benevac on return in September, and in-form Zac Lloyd sticks from the lead-up work.

Verdict: Tricky opener. Melanite can be backed each-way. Also something on Splash Of Steel at a huge quote.

Race 2 - 1:05PM Magic Millions Country Cup Tips (1200m)

Now gaining a start is first emergency 17. Astra Star, who rates as one of the early fancies in a very open market. He was in restricted room first-up when placing and appeared to be ticking over well in a recent trial. An early-season metro attempt over 1800m proved too far, but he was consistent prior to that.

3. Sir Carter couldn’t have been braver on return last month when sitting on a fast speed and sticking on to score with 62.5kg. He’s since been freshened, and two subsequent winners have emerged from that race.

6. Revolt resumes as a four-year-old who has won seven of ten starts, including an unbeaten six-run stretch last preparation.

12. Arctic Legend was well held on stable debut for Matthew Dunn, though completely unsuited. The extra 200m should suit and he can improve.

Verdict: Sets up okay for Astra Star, but these deep country races are often raffles.

Race 3 - 1:40PM Magic Millions The Debut 2YO Plate Tips (1000m)

Early money has been for 7. Toorak Jewel, a dominant Gold Coast trial winner on December 30, with the engagement of James McDonald only fuelling market moves. Late betting fluctuations may be telling.

The Waterhouse & Bott yard is always prominent in debut juvenile races and they saddle dual trial winner 6. Lady Moscato, a daughter of Home Affairs whose first-season progeny have hit the ground running.

Another from the stable is 4. Wendell, who was a stylish heat winner at Rosehill on December 23.

The chances don’t end there, with 3. Tengun Tommy perhaps the swooper who can chime in late at a price.

Verdict: The market could be your best guide in a field of first starters.

Race 4 - 2:15PM Queensland Magic Millions Subzero Tips (2200m)

One of the outsiders is 13. Tambeloa, a three-year-old I’ve always had time for. After breaking his maiden at good odds for us, he just missed a placing in the Group 1 Spring Champions Stakes as our big-priced value play. He was one-paced last time under 60kg, and now hard-fit with an 8kg weight drop, could spike.

Another bolter is 8. Private Legacy from a stable that often peaks on this day. She had excuses last start when wide and losing a plate, and the She’s A Hustler form is holding up well since her Listed win last autumn.

Even with 3kg more over a longer trip, it’s a slight surprise that 1. Miss Joelene isn’t favourite after last Saturday’s Wave performance.

6. Snitzanova arguably produced one of the better Wave runs outside Miss Joelene, working home in restricted room. The key query is whether he stays.

Verdict: Tambeloa and Private Legacy for each-way/roughie players. No knock on Miss Joelene at $6+.

Race 5 - 2:50PM TAB Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Tips (1300m)

Fresh appears best for the resuming 6. It’s A Knockout. While still competitive in three subsequent runs last preparation, her standout performance came first-up at Randwick when she demolished the field, with runner-up Oh Diamond Lil winning her next three, including a Group race. James McDonald takes the reins.

2. Jenni The Fox had strong three-year-old references, including a second to Treasurethe Moment. She teased punters this season before breaking through at Geelong last start and is well placed again against her own sex.

Perhaps the overs runner is 7. Sunset Dreaming, arriving off two stakes placings, although she will again need luck from a wide draw.

1. Dance To The Boom completed a hat-trick on Melbourne Cup Day, defeating Jenni The Fox, and remains open to improvement with the January 3 run under the belt.

Verdict: It’s A Knockout brings a strong fresh profile. Each-way, but not getting carried away.

Race 6 - 3:25PM Howden Magic Millions Snippets Tips (1200m)

Perhaps the one peaking is 2. The Instructor, who narrowly lost an on-speed duel fresh against the progressive and in-form King’s Secret, to whom he was conceding 7kg. He has won three of four second-up runs, including a victory over War Machine, who went on to win his next four, including the Group 1 Stradbroke.

1. Hidden Wealth is the best horse in the race on raw ability and has won two of three this preparation following a frustrating winter. He’s also one of the key on-speed influences.

6. Spywire bounced back last Saturday and could enjoy a similar setup here with a soft run behind a genuine tempo, carrying 2.5kg less.

Lightly raced 10. Redford could be the blowout, having trialled since a fresh win at Eagle Farm last month.

Verdict: Everything points towards The Instructor. Backing the favourite, with a small each-way play on Redford.

Race 7 - 4:05PM TAB Magic Millions 2YO Classic Tips (1200m)

A clear favourite is 4. Warwoven, with Bjorn Baker chasing back-to-back wins in this race with the unbeaten colt.

He stamped himself as a serious contender when reeling in Shiki on debut at Randwick before confirming that promise with a strong 1200m win at Eagle Farm on January 3, where he again suggested plenty in hand late.

Two-year-olds can be tricky, but Warwoven holds a clear ratings edge, maps well from a good draw and has options under Rachel King.

Michael Freedman and Tommy Berry combine with 11. Mystical, who impressed on debut when second in the Max Lees Classic with the fastest last 200m, then again closed best behind Paradoxium in the Wyong Magic Millions. A solid 1200m looks ideal.

5. Unit Five won the Magic Millions VIC 2YO Classic on debut and has trialled well since, while 1. Zip Lock returned from a freshen-up to score a comfortable Group 3 victory.

Verdict: Short, but Warwoven deserves top billing with a clear ratings edge. Mystical appeals as value at bolter odds.

Race 8 - 4:45PM Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas Tips (1400m)

1. Ninja progressed from a debut third to win his next two starts in Sydney before resuming with a solid third in the Magic Millions Pierata Plate at Doomben.

He appreciated the rise to 1300m last start, settling off the speed before finishing strongly to score in the Vo Rogue Plate on January 3.

This looks a thin Guineas and, provided the track allows runners to make ground, Ninja appears very hard to beat.

A sharp second-up improver could be 13. Dragonne Rouge, a filly who impressed early with a winning hat-trick to open her career, including a Listed victory. There were excuses in her first defeat, and she resumed without a public trial at Eagle Farm over 1200m, settling back and drifting late in betting.

On trial at the trip is 10. Memo, an honest three-year-old who had a nice fresh blowout in the Gosford Guineas, while 8. Cellarmaster has upside but staying at 1400m may be the query after breaking through second-up.

Verdict: With even luck and a fair track, Ninja looks very hard to beat. Dragonne Rouge the roughie option for exotics.

Race 9 - 5:20PM Magic Millions Cup Tips (1400m)

7. West Of Africa won this race last year, beating Charm Stone, who went on to win two of her next three at Group 1 level. With this clearly the target third-up, he’s been ticking over nicely in two Sydney runs, recording the fastest last 400m in both.

1. Yellow Brick proved too classy last Saturday despite conceding significant weight. This is tougher, but he remains the best credentialed horse in the field.

5. Depth Of Character looks forgotten. His Golden Eagle fourth reads exceptionally well, and he was luckless in the Group 1 Railway. The drop back in trip is a major tick after the Northerly, and his recent trial was sound.

4. Needs Some Luck faces a stiffer task after enjoying favours last time, but he continues to build a tidy record and can measure up.

Verdict: West Of Africa each-way at the odds. Stablemate Depth Of Character also appeals at a price.

Race 10 - 5:55PM Magic Millions Class 6 Plate Tips (1200m)

5. John Rambo has always been difficult to catch, but he’s very capable and in a thin race shapes as a strong each-way play. The Yellow Brick form from last week stacks up, and he should have finished a clear second. From a wider draw with room, he’ll be charging late.

14. Roselyn’s Star is well found as favourite but comes with fewer convictions than most. She scored a deserved win in October before a break, and her fresh August run off a long layoff was enormous.

Honest 3. Taltarni Fields should be competitive with even luck, arriving second-up off a solid Eagle Farm return, with the rise from 1000m to 1200m ideal.

Harder here for 13. Miss Personality, but she arrives off a hat-trick and overcame trouble when stepping up in grade last time.

Verdict: John Rambo is a strong each-way play. Include Taltarni Fields, Roselyn’s Star and Miss Personality in all multiples.
