Favourite vs field is a betting option that is available with all bookmakers, allowing you to essentially 'lay' the favourite by taking a combined price on every other runner in the race.

The favourite vs field betting feature is not often seen by punters on the racecard, as it is down the bottom of each race on betting sites.

But it is a tool that can become handy if you are keen to take on a short priced favourite.

How does the favourite vs field option work?

Bookmakers will offer two prices, the price of the favourite which is available when placing a win bet on a horse or greyhound, and then the field price.

The field price is combined price of every runner in the field (besides the favourite) to win the race.

To win using a favourite vs field bet, you need the following to happen:

  • If you back the favourite betting option, then you need the favourite to win to be paid out.
  • If you back the field betting option, then you need any runner other than the listed favourite in the race to win to be paid out.

Why is the field betting option so short in price?

Because you are taking on the favourite, you have multiple runners in your selection, which takes up a greater market percentage.

This tool can be used on all races, but to find value with the field tool, it is best to use it when there is a very short priced favourite, under $2 that you do not think will win, therefore enhancing the field options price.

Which bookmakers offer favourite vs field betting?

Almost all Australian betting sites have favourites vs field betting. You will find it available at Betstar, Ladbrokes, SportsBetting, Palmerbet and Sportsbet.
