Alexandra Eala is back in the spotlight at the Dubai Tennis Championships, facing a robust challenge against Sorana Cirstea for a quarter-final spot. Eala, having recently defeated top-seeded Jasmine Paolini, is looking to extend her success. However, Cirstea stands as a formidable opponent, boasting a stellar 10-2 record this season, and having won seven consecutive matches. With her experience and recent form against players outside the top 45, Cirstea is favored to win. Tune in to see if Eala can upset the odds or if Cirstea maintains her dominance.

Sorana Cirstea vs Alexandra Eala Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

Alexandra Eala is in primetime again in Dubai, but she faces a tough assignment in the form of Sorana Cirstea for a place in the quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

Eala commanded another raucous crowd in Dubai in her previous round, where she earned a third top 10 scalp by beating Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. It was Eala's first top 10 win since taking out Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek in Miami almost 12 months ago. It's also the first time the 20-year-old has advanced to the R16 of a WTA 1000 tournament since that Miami run to the semi-finals that initially put her on the map. Safe to say the pro-Filipino crowd was delighted with the result.
However, I think Eala's run in Dubai comes to an end here. Cirstea has put together an unlikely resurgence to start the year, with the 35-year-old announcing this will be her final year on tour. Perhaps the Romanian is reconsidering, because she's gone 10-2 to start the year, losing only to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and four-time major champion Naomi Osaka.

Cirstea is on a seven-match winning streak after claiming the Cluj title and all seven of those victories have come in straight sets. She also has an amazing recent record vs players outside the top 45. While Eala has been strong against the top 10, her record against players from No. 11 to No. 50 isn't as good. Backing Cirstea to cover and register another straight sets win.
  • Cirstea is 10-2 to start the season
  • Cirstea is on a seven-match winning streak
  • All seven of those victories were in straight sets
  • Cirstea has won 22 of her last 23 matches vs players outside the top 45
  • Seventeen of those 22 wins have come in straight sets
  • Cirstea is 3-1 in Dubai R16 matches
  • Eala is 4-13 vs players ranked from No. 11 to No. 50 in her career in completed matches
  • Seven of Eala's last nine defeats vs players in the No. 11 to No. 50 range have been in straight sets

Sorana Cirstea Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 10-2
  • WTA Dubai Record: 17-9
  • Current Ranking: No. 32
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 21 (2013)

It's been an incredible start to the season for Cirstea and if she continues this sort of form, she could very soon eclipse her career-high ranking that was achieved more than a decade ago in 2013.

Cirstea's only two defeats in 2026 have come against multiple-time Grand Slam champions, with Sabalenka ending her Brisbane campaign in the R16 and Osaka knocking her out of the Australian Open second round in three sets.

The 35-year-old picked herself back up at her home tournament in Cluj earlier this month, surging to her fourth WTA title without dropping a single set, crushing Emma Raducanu in the final.

Cirstea has extended her winning streak to seven matches in Dubai, taking out qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 7-6 before toppling 10th seed Linda Noskova 6-1 6-4 in another dominant performance.

Alexandra Eala Form Analysis

  • 2026 Record: 7-4
  • WTA Dubai Record: 2-0
  • Current Ranking: No. 47
  • Career-High Ranking: No. 40 (Feb 2026)

Eala has put together a solid start to the season, reaching the Auckland semi-finals and quarter-finals in Abu Dhabi - although she would have been disappointed with a first round Australian Open exit to Alycia Parks.

The 20-year-old is arguably the most popular player in tennis (men or woman) right now, with massive Filipino crowds supporting her at every tournament she enters.

It's of course no different in Dubai, where Eala sent her fans into a frenzy with a brilliant 6-1 7-6(5) victory over World No. 8 Jasmine Paolini, earning her third top 10 victory and first since Miami last year.

“All the emotions are coming because the tension was so high, especially during that second set,” Eala said post-match in her on-court interview.
“So I’m really happy to have gotten through. (Paolini) is a great opponent, obviously, being Top 10 and a former champion here, so to be able to compete with her at this level is a great achievement for me.
“In the tiebreak, I was trying everything to keep myself in check. At the change of ends, I was thinking, you know, this stadium is full of Filipinos. I thought, ‘How many of them are probably praying for me to win?’ So I really had to give everything I got.”
