After clawing her way back into the top 15, Badosa will be searching for some winning momentum ahead of the Australian Open, while Stearns is hoping to get off to a better start to the season than 2024, where she could only manage three wins across her opening 10 tournaments.

Badosa was looking like a Grand Slam contender when she climbed all the way to No. 2 in the world after winning the Indian Wells title in 2021.

However, the Spaniard's career has been repeatedly been derailed with various injury problems ever since and she's struggled to produce her best tennis as a result.

Badosa did manage to play relatively injury-free for large chunks of 2024 and her ranking now reflects her current level.

The 27-year-old won 31 of 40 matches from Rome to Ningbo, rising to a current ranking of No. 12. Badosa couldn't get off the mark for 2025 last week in Brisbane, losing a three-setter against one of last season's breakout stars Elina Avanesyan.

Peyton Stearns Form

Stearns comes into this tournament ranked No. 47 in the world, with her 2024 highlights including winning a maiden WTA title in Rabat, along with reaching quarter-finals in Toronto and Cleveland.

The American has already made a better start to 2025 than last season, where she could only win three matches across her 10 opening tournaments.

Stearns defeated Veronika Kudermetova in the opening round of Brisbane last week before going down to Daria Kasatkina in three sets, while she overcame Maria Sakkari in a dramatic three-hour battle in the final round of qualifying in Adelaide to enter the main draw.

Badosa looked okay in her Brisbane opener and should be better for the run as she begins her Adelaide campaign.

Stearns has a lot of mileage in her legs already this season, so she will definitely be battle-hardened heading into this contest.
